| Servo/winch question
I looked over the tech section about using a servo to make a winch with. I got the pot CA'd in the stop position, dremeled out the inside center of the main gear that the horn goes on so it wouldn't turn the pot and clipped off the tab that stops rotation from left to right. Hooked everything up and I can only get the servo to turn one direction. Even if I reverse the aux. channel. Any ideas on how to make it work right? Thanks.

Did you glue the pot in the center/neutral position? I just did mine last night also. I adjusted it so it was right at neutral between forward and reverse.

I glued the pot right between F/R BrandO. There is a fine line between F/R but when the motor stopped in between, I locked it down. The servo I am using is a Duratrax SX-100 Colquitt. It has plastic gears but I wanted to try it on a free one first. I have a spare Futaba 3305 HT MG but I don't want to screw it up so that I can't use it for steering on my rig. I know it probably doesn't have alot of torque I'm just messing around right now. I think I'm going to use the larger round horn and CA a washer the same size to the smaller outside horn to be able to spool more string. And now I can't even find the friggin rear cover for the servo. I've looked everywhere so now it's time to check the trash. Last edited by scruff007; 12-24-2006 at 09:03 AM. |

This is what I've come up with so far. There is 6 1/2' of string on the spool at half full. Haven't tested yet. I'll figure out the direction problem later. |

now thats a drum, you can actually spool out enough rope to reach somthing, unlike the one in the tech section. |

yeah that looks a hell of lot better than my drum. i just threw mine together last night out of spare parts... i just got the pot centered, and then shaved it down, had to re adjust a little then CA'd it in place... then removed the stop pin and it works fine... |

I ended up wedging a small piece of plastic beside the pot and then CA glueing it. I hope it will work okay. Now I need to get it mounted to my rig. I'll test it first to see how much weight it can pull. May need to go to a stronger servo. Could I possibly wire some switches to the servo to be able to reverse to polarity for in and out function?

I have been reading a lot on "how to make a winch" on here and other places as well. One thing that came to mind was a gear reduction on the drum of sorts. The drum that you have made is one of the better ones that I have seen. If you went with a servo gear output with 24T and a drum gear of 96T. Would get you a 4:1 reduction beyond what the servo already has. To make the drum use 2 set screw hubs, 3" of 5mm shaft, two bushings, 2 round servo horns, some aluminum block or Nylon. Drill holes for the bushings in the side, on the botton drill holes for mounting to your chassis. Slide the shaft throught the bushings install the hubs with the gear and horns. This is just an idea I have had and there is a bit more to building one. So if you have any questions feel free to ask. Steve |

Having the small spindle is a gear(esque) reduction in itself. The smaller it is the more leverage you have... |

I need a spool like that on mine, thanks for the idea. I use the third channel on my M-8 spools in and out with just a turn with easily ajustable speed.

Good idea Mechbob. Adding a spur would definately give much better torque to the system.
