Default waterproof or waterresistant?

i was wheeling my rig with weak radio batteries too close to a 50ft cliff into a river and it decided to go for a swim. i bought a boat esc assuming it was waterproof. rig was dead so i assumed it was the reciever as it wasnt in a ballon or anything. replace the reciever and nothing. so after some fiddling it turns out its the esc. so are componets proofed or restistant?
