| Picking the right motor and esc for custom trophy truck
Hey guys, I've built a few tube chassis class 3 crawlers before and I'm wanting to do something different this time. I picked up an axial yeti score roller and I'm going to be making a full tube chassis for it. I'm gonna be using it mostly for bashing, jumping and maybe a little running around on the track so I want it to have ample power. Being that my last builds were crawlers, they utilized a hh brxl and a brushed motor, so I'm new to the brushless scene. I need your recommendations for a good esc and motor combo for this build. I'd like to stay around 200-250 in price.. thanks

Mamba X/Slate motor combo. I dont think there would ever be a reason I would run a sensorless brushless.

Hard to go wrong with the Mamba slate motor & ESC. That said... if this is going to be a basher and not do any crawling, I don't think sensored is necessary at all, and just adds unnecessary expense. I've got a $20 Tacon 3500kv in my dad's Ruckus and it doesn't cog at all. The on/off threshold is at too high of a speed for it to be a good crawler, but in a geared down yeti, it would be even better. I'd probably save some money and go with a decent sensorless motor and an inexpensive ESC for this type of application. Here's a startup video of that Ruckus with the Tacon motor. The video is cued up to that point: https://youtu.be/O9dIKXq0Nyk?t=682 Last edited by Jim85IROC; 01-16-2018 at 07:17 AM. |

I think the slate motor might be a bit under powered for a yeti score. The stock Axial Motor is a longer motor for a reason. I'd probably go for the Mamba X with 1512 2650kv motor. A tube chassis is probably going to weigh more than stock and would benefit from the extra torque of the large diameter motor. If your chassis doesn't weigh too much you could save some money and get the 1410 3800kv with 5mm shaft. You could probably pick up a used stock Yeti motor and pair it with a Mamba X and get pretty good performance and save some money. |
