Try scratching the surface of the battery with a piece of sand paper. It will allow the solder to stick easier. Also be sure to tin the battery and the battery bars seperately, then hold the bar to the battery and hold the iron tip on the bar to melt the two together.

Do you have any flux? Is your wire rosin core? If you just have rosin core wire, burn some of the solder onto iron while holding it right next to the sanded battery. The smoke will "prep" the cell a bit, and then you can touch the iron with more solder to the cell for a few seconds. You need lots of contact area on the cell, so file your tip flat if it is round.

I disagree, I have been doing this for years with a 40 watt Weller with no issues, although it has to have the wider chissel tip, part of the key is the size of the tip not the wattage.
