Default Gearing

I'm running a hh crawlmaster expert 13t in my gelande 2. I ran it with the stock gearing that is 14t pinion and 87t spur, I ran it on 3s and seemed to get hot after 15 minutes of running, I don't have a temp gun but it was hot when I touched it. Should I run a smaller pinion to help with temps or try running it on 2s. I'm horrible at figuring out gearing, is there a general rule of thumb to figure it out? Thanks for any info

Well, you’re already at a pretty good ratio. Have you checked for any binding in the driveline? Maybe your pinion and spur mesh is too tight? I’d suggest checking it. Loosen your motor up, then place a small strip of paper between the pinion and spur. Tension the pinion and spur back together with the paper between. Tighten your motor back up and rotate your driveline to spit the paper out from between the pinion and spur. You should have ideal pinion and spur mesh now. Ideal ratios are anywhere in the 5:1 to 6:1 ratio. You’re sitting at 6.2:1 with your current pinion and spur size, so you’re good to go there. Now, ring and pinion in your axles can effect final drive ratio. You may want to check those and see where they’re at in terms of ratio.

That seems like a pretty huge spur gear, is it 48p?

Given the tooth count, it’s more than likely 48p.
