Default Predictions? Purchased random out runner motor, will it work?

So I wanted to see if I could get an out runner to work. I worked out some basic features, found this motor, super keen to see if it works...

Keen to see what everyone thinks?

I'll uapdate tomorrow after I've tried it

sure. The question is, what is it going into, and what is the motor kv?

It is 1250kv, 35-42 size and is going into a wraith or a SCX10. Will run it off a mx, while I wait for a new sw4

Should be fine at that KV.

4mm pinion shaft on those IIRC. How do you plan to mount a pinion?

It's a 5mm shaft thankfully, I checked that before I purchased it. I only got a chance to bench test it, but seemed to work will. Looking forward to putting it into something and seeing how it goes

Well, I'm going to claim a win. It fit well, and has buckets of torque. I have only hooked it up to a super old hw esc, which isn't very smooth, so I'll have more info when I try a much more modern esc.

I selected a 12 stator 3542 cheapie & am more than pleased with it. They virtually all have 5mm shafts, which is great for shaft strength but difficult for gear selection.

One thing to look at with random outrunners is pole/coil count. I found most with either 6, 9, or 12 stators. Speed/kv is mostly why you'll find them a certain way, but generally more stators = more poles = more torque for a given speed. It's a given that cheaper motors will be less efficient due to poor winding & cheap magnets, but I think it's more than sufficient when you consider performace/$.

I have some budget outrunner motors, in a similar KV range, which I tried running a couple of years ago, using an SV3, but couldn’t get sufficient smoothness at startup and breaking, but torque and battery life was astounding! I managed to keep them, and intend to retry them with an SW4. However, if they fail to impress, I’ll use the HH Revolver 1800 I bought a few months back. Well, that, or the Tenshock 906 2400kv. I’m kind of a motor junkie, and recently discovered that I have more motors than esc’s.

I have quite a few, and I tend to use mine with 2/3 speed transmissions. Torque is astounding in lower gear, and the higher gear gives back some wheelspeed that you lose when running an outrunner. Very cool and different motors.

It will no doubt work. But, will it last?

I'm just curious if all outrunners make noise like the HH 1800kv Revolver or if that is a unique property of the HH motor.

They all do.

I've had issues with outrunners in trail trucks sucking in sand/etc and getting all sorts of buggered up.

IIRC it's the PWM frequency causing resonances in the physical parts in a range we can hear. It can be reduced with a higher frequency drive but the trade-off is mosfet heat. ESC's are rarely shining examples of cutting-edge fast-switching mosfets.

There's not much to wear out besides the bearing. At most he'll exceed the voltage/amp rating of the stator wire. The china inrunner I've had in my 150A+ boat has lasted 2 years so far, I doubt a tiny outrunner will do any worse. Ironically these outrunners generally have easier to service bearings than most brushed & inrunner motors.
