Default 2200kv vs 2850kv brushless motor comparisons

Does a 2200kv motor on 3S run any differently than a 2850kv motor on 3S? I am wondering about low speed start up, smoothness, minimum speed...etc.

I've been running a Castle Slate 2850kv / Mamba X on my SCX10ii for about a year now on 2S. I just bought a 3S pack to take advantage of 'volting up / gearing down'.

The 2850kv i run with 13/56 gearing on 2S. Its plenty quick. On 3S, it really really quick now . I think a 11t pinion is about as small as i can get with the kit 2-speed trans...not sure if that will slow it down enough. I have the throttle curve mapped, but i just feel like this motor may be a little over sized for what i am using it for.

Considering a Holmes Puller Pro Stubby in 2200kv. I am guessing a Puller Pro vs the Slate will have its own advantages.

Well, yeah. The 2850 is faster than the the 2200. Those numbers represent RPM per volt. So the 2200 motor makes 2200 rpm per volt of battery, and the 2850 does the same. So just a quick calculation gets you 24420 rpm from the 2200 at nominal voltage, and the 2850 gets you 31635 rpm from the same 11.1v. The Holmes motor will be much more powerful than a slate. The slates are made to a price point and not absolute power with no corners cut.

Is the resolution at low speed / low throttle input any different between a lower and higher KV motor at the same voltage?

I ran a puller pro 3500kv in my scx10ii and it was great! I just use the throttle to keep speed down but when I wanted it, it was there

A lower kv will be smoother at low throttle.

minimum startup speed will be the same though. The higher KV will feel more touchy on the throttle, but it will be capable of going just as slow. At least from 3500kv and down. As the KV gets too high the ESC voltage drop tends to make startup a little spongier and rev happy.

For better low end, the higher kv motors can do more for you. If you gear down to the wheel speed of the 2200kv motor, a 2850kv will have a lower initial startup speed, better torque across the board, a stronger drag brake and more awesomeness. You can fit a 68t spur and a 9t pinion on the kit transmission.

I purchased the Puller Pro Stubby 2200kv.

I did a not so scientific test of testing minimum startup speed. Using the throttle end point adjustment on my radio, both the Castle 2850 and Holmes 2200 started at around the same time... with a trim adjustment of 33-35 respectively.

I only ran around the yard and the garage, but the 2200 i think is smoother at low speed. John H was spot on in that the throttle is not nearly as sensitive as before..this alone made the motor change worthwhile. I think the PullerPro is also a little quieter compared to the Castle Slate.

The 2200kv on 3S is about the same speed as the 2850kv was on 2S.

Currently running the stock spur with a 13t pinion. I will likely try gearing down further to a 11t or 12t.

For real fun go 4s with that 2200.

May need a 3t pinion for that...or would that just be a cog at that point
