Default Good motor upgrade for redcat everest 10

G'day I'd like to upgrade the stock motor in my redcat everest 10 mainly because it doesn't even go walking speed which is a pain. Mostly I do crawling but also a little bit of trail driving too. I was think a holmes hobbies motor but I'm not exactly sure which one to get. Maybe the 13t or 16t crawl master? I don't want to sacrifice low speed control but I definitely need a bit more wheel speed. Thanks

I should add. I'm running stock gearing, a hobbywing quicrun 1060 and 2s lipo. I don't plan on changing any lf that if I don't have to.

The Holmes Crawlmaster motors are some of my favorite motors, they have great low speed control with decent wheel speed depending on gearing. Having an ESC that you can program a throttle curve on really compliments the low speed control.

A simple way to get more wheel speed is to swap to a larger pinion (more teeth = faster). When you gear up you do need to check motor and ESC temps as gearing it too high can overheat the motor or ESC. A basic way to test this is to touch them and you should be able to touch them for at least 5 seconds without having to pull away. If you cant touch it that long its likely too hot. You can also get IR temp readers, for these make sure you're under 180 degrees C, ideally you should be well below that depending on your climate.

Another way to get more is with more voltage like going from 2S to 3S, but you'll need to make sure your ESC can handle it, and you'll also need to check what the ESC's motor turn limit is when running 3S.

The Holmes Hobbies motors are definitely a great choice. I'm not entirely familiar with the turns conversions from the stock style to the higher end Crawlmaster, but a 16-20t would probably be about right.

Edit: I should mention, I went from a stock motor to a 35t RC4WD in my E10. The Crawlmaster is a 5 slot motor, whereas the stock motor and the RC4WD motors are both 3 slot. So that's why I'm not entirely sure what to recommend.

I have the 10T Crawlmaster Pro 550 in my TRX-4.

Geared down with a 9T pinion on my TRX-4 with a 2 speed it is absolutely perfect. The best low speed control I've ever had and you couldn't catch up with it without doing a little jog when it wants to.

I know yours won't be exactly the same, but the Crawlmaster comes highly recommended by me regardless.

Goodluck!

What sort of speed difference did you get with the 35t rc4wd motor?

It was noticable. I went from full throttle lagging behind me with barely walking, to being able to keep pretty much even with me at about half throttle now.
This is on 3s.

Just for reference the Everest 10 comes stock with a 54T 540 motor.

Thanks for that bit of information I had no idea how many turns the stock motor was! that will make it much easier to decide what to upgrade to

16t Crawlmaster would be a good middle ground to start with.

I have a trail master sport in my Everest, and let me warn you this frame is gonna be torque twisting like crazy with a higher power motor. It’s fun, just depends on how much it bothers you. Bothered me enough I bought an scx10 lol.

I have a rig that started out as an Everest 10 (not much of it left now, but still using the transmission). I am using the HH crawlmaster expert 540 13t for it. I would definitely recommend it. It is much faster, has better low speed control, and develops more peak torque than the stock motor.

You could just add a larger pinnion gear on the motor moving up 2 or 3 teeth should do it

Alternatively if you get a 3s battery instead of a motor you Everest will have the same crawling low end, and it will go 1/3 faster. Ask a friend or local hobby store if you can try one out for a minute or two. I mean there are 3s batteries all over for $20 if you get a small one.
