The Mamba max and crawlmaster are a great combo, what batteries are you using?

Make sure you gear down, if not that combination with the stock gearing will cause the truck to lurch back and forth at very low speeds. I spoke with JRH about this. My Crawlmaster 850kv works great with the stock Spur Gear and 12T Pinion, the Crawlmaster 1000kv and stock gearing lurched at low speeds. So volt up and gear down and it will work great...

I run two rigs with quark 33a and crawlmasters and I love the setup..I run two crawlmaster and mamba max's in my super and I hate the start up..If you can find a quark I would try to get my hand one it they are super smooth the max will work fine and is a geart esc but it is no where near as smooth as a quark..

im also interested in this, i know alot of people use Holmes motors with the Mamba Max ESC and people say great things about the two together, if im not mistaken there is also a combo being sold on HolmesHobbies.com.
So on a Axial AX-10 i should gear down? but why do you say volt up? does it work better with higher voltage?

also gearing down will still give the wheel speed i need?

I too am considering the crawlmaster,or the scorpion 3020-14 running a mamba max with 11.1v lipos in my ax 10. I'm just not sure which would be the better motor. I want good low speed performance torque, but also want to be able to be able to spin the wheels at full throttle. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

And by the way Go Holmes Hobbies, for Crawlers there's no better place to buy your gear..........Go John....

Honestly, skip the MM for a crawler. I've got a Quark33, a MM and a mamba 25 - the mamba's love to go fast, but the low speed sucks. The low end on the quark is magic. Can't go wrong with the Crawlermaster.

By gearing down you will increase your torque, but loose wheel speed, to maintain the same gearing ratio, but increase you wheel speed just add more cells to you batteries ie 6 cell=7.2, 7 cell=8.4, 8 cell=9.6, the higher the voltage the faster the wheel speed. I like my crawlers to go real slow so AX-10 stock Spur gear, 10T or 12T Pinion Gear Clawlmaster 850kv, Mamba Max, and a 6 Cell Battery, If I find that I need more wheel speed, I will leave everything the same but use a 7 or 8 Cell Battery.

The quark will handle 5 cells, I'm not sure about that motor, but I know I run a quark with a bm-16 and its almost 6 oz, it gets allitle warm but no problems yet.

That motor will kill your ax10. Its too much motor. I have a scorpion 3014-18 from John in my WK, and its WAY overkill, also the 3020-14 is a 5mm shaft for 5mm pinions. Find something smaller and save yourself the breakage. Maybe a Revolver Black a Crawlmaster or a BM9(TCSCrawlers), only thing with the BM9 is it requires a motor plate adapter to bolt up to the AX-10

Hello All,

It is my first time to post and I want to share with you a bit of my happiness.

I've been playing brushless outrunner crawlers for more than 2 years and owned different BL ESCs like Q33, MM and M25.

Recently, I came across the Lightning 38 BL ESC and I like it very much. It's start-up is very controllable and smooth and it feels more like brushed than brushless setup. It can also perform something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFJOX4dOZ-k (Thanks Edison) that no other BL ESCs I have ever tried can do

Highly recommended for brushless crawlers

Sit back and enjoy a slow and smooth ride :-P

Interesting, Shalom... How about the reverse-delay of the Lightning 38 ?

tomik,

Using Mode 3 (brake to stop than revese), the ESC will apply brake before going into the opposite direction and I can feel a little bit of delay.

Using Mode 5 (the crawler mode with adjustable drag brake at throttle neutral), the ESC will reverse the motor rotation direction immediately and I can't feel any delay However, both the ESC and motor do run a bit hotter if I do a lot, I mean a looooooot, very quickly forward and reverse.

Can the lightning 38 be hooked to the PC for fine tuning?

Nope. It uses a sequence of beeps to program it. It took me about 30 minutes to learn how to do it properly, and then 5 minutes to fully program it.
