Default Axial stub shafts & Berg O-rings

When you're switching to the Axial stub shafts, are you using the rubber o-ring that the stock Berg stub shafts have?

Before the first run of my Berg, I swapped the stock Berg stub shafts for the Axial stub shafts to avoid any breakage. During the first comp with the Berg, I ended up with 3wd until I placed a O-ring on the inside of the Axial stub shaft which appears to keep the dog bone seated in the differential.

BTW, I had a 5mm washer between the bearing and hex pin on the stub shaft to keep the play at the wheels down during the first and second course until I had to take a repair.

Yep, I also used just one in each stub. Two seamed a bit tight in the front and hindered the streering. Just completed the first comp with it, no issues yet.

You stated you had a 5mm washer. Does this mean you no longer use the 5mm washer to keep the play at the wheels down?

at the moment, i removed it since thought it was causing the issue with the 3wd. still had the issue on the next course. so someone had an o-ring and i installed that - 4wd back. i'll be inspecting everything tonight to see if i still need a washer to reduce the lateral play the wheels have.

Thanks for the heads up, I am not running an O-ring but will go install one to insure I don't have the same issue. I ran it at its first comp two weekends ago and had no issues though.

Tried 2 o-rings, thought that was a little too snug. I installed 1 o-ring and have over 8 hours on the rig and no issues.

I've been running the one o-ring set-up for a little over a month now with no issues at all.

The little black guys that are stuffed down in the stub shaft cups.

There are normally two in each stub shaft on a stock setup.

They look like this, except mine were black.

If your's are missing that's probably why your inner popped out of the locker.

I tried two o rings with my axial stubs and felt it was too tight, one o ring seems to fit just right.

My wife had the same problem during her first comp and she installed one of the Berg o-rings and never has had a problem since. The reason Berg has two o-rings is there stub shaft is mad e with a deeper pocket.

Exactly. I had the same issue, luckily I found the 3WD situation as I was test pulling the trigger before starting a course!

Berg stub - 2 o-rings
Axial stub - 1 o-ring

I've always used two O rings. After a couple of comps the O rings soften up. I find that by then the one O ring stops serving its purpose and things get sloppy.

I use a 3mm or 4mm peice of nitro fuel tubing in each Axial stub, it stays in the stubs better than the o-rings do (imo).

Have any of you guys noticed a reduction in steering angle running the axial stub shafts? For some reason My steering seems to have a bind in it at full lock...Like the ends of the cups are hitting the inner axle and cause my drivetrain to bump/bind. I can just dial some steering out of it, but in order to get it to go away completely i feel like i'm giving away all my steering. On average...what kind of steering angles are you guys getting with your bergs converted to axial stub?

I'm running VP knuckles and or ckrc knuckles. The vp knuckles move the bearing in a bit so the o-ring is no longer needed. The ckrc knuckle requires the o-ring...howvever...both set-ups have the problem above. equally

Thanks!
