| Nluv's BTA/OTA Berg Steering setup
From the start I was on a budget like most guys and just ordered the axle’s instead of the full kit. Once I got them I realized I had some fabricating to do! Nothing wrong with that, ended up getting creative and figured out a BTA (behind the axle) or OTA (over the axle) steering setup. Not sure which it is but who cares, it works As I started mocking up different ideas I realized a few issues. I definitely wanted to eliminate the clamps that mount to the axle tube mostly for clearance reasons. The other problem was that there are not any holes on the axle to mount anything to! First bracket was made from some aluminum angle. It basically gives me a mount for one side of the servo, bolts to the gear case using the upper link mount holes and relocates the upper link mount further back out of the servos way. The relocation of the upper link mount might be a problem for some people that don’t want to make new links It also messes with the suspension geometry, however it’s the front so I was not too concerned, the steering advantages were worth it to me. Here you can see some progress on the steering tie rod. My knuckles are flipped and so are the lower link mounts. I also drilled a new hole in the knuckles and cut the old ones off. The tie rod is 3/16” SS tubing and I used some 3mm threaded links from a tlt kit that are pinched inside at the bend. They aren’t going anywhere. You can also see that the servo is raised high enough off the axle the the tie rod can move freely between the gear case and bottom of the servo. |

Now for the bracket to support the other side of the servo. Because I flipped my lower link mounts I was able to build this mount from aluminum channel. The axial 6mm spacers worked perfectly. I had to clearance the bracket in a few spots for the shocks to clear. Its nothing fancy at all. Next I brazed a tlt link mount onto the tie rod for the drag link to attach to. A few preliminary finished product pics. Only picture I have that shows the part removed from the bracket for the shock to clear. This wont be an issue if you have enough separation at the tops of your shocks. You can also see the location of the new holes I drilled in the knuckles. I will update this thread with some new pictures soon. I have made a few more slight changes and fixed the drag link angle slightly. Also notice the correct ackerman angles at full lock. I personally like the ackerman angles this setup allows. The main advantage is steering uphill while sidehilling. You can square up the tire to the climb, however the ackerman on the stock steering setup you can turn sharper since the outside tire is at a greater angle. Feel free to discuss and ask questions. |

I like the idea. Not quite what I envisioned, But I like it. It is similar to what I've been thinking of, but I want to leave the servo bottomed out on the axle and bow the link up and over the servo.

Nice idea, be sure to post pics in this thread when you get it done! There is definitely more than one way to do this.

Did you drill and tap the extra holes in you knuckle or did they come that way? Been thinking about drilling some holes to bring the link closer to the truck then doing a reversed setup of what you have. Over the axle steering in front of the axle.

Yeah I added the extra holes. I wanted to keep the tie rod as straight as possible so adding those really helped.

[quote=Nluvwithxlr8ing;1273546]Thanks! What do you want to see? It worked great at the past two comps. Not having a tie rod to get caught on is great quote] My daughter keeps me from saying i have time to make my own. Do you have an extra one that I can buy off of ya? |

Have you ever thought about using one servo per side, then you could have few different mixs set up similiar to what the airplane guys do. Mix in different amounts of throws and end points. You might have to use a dx6 or something but was wondering if it has been done or could be benefiacal.
