Default Just another Berg Build

After being brought out to a local comp by one of my good friends and running his backup rig, I decided I wanted to get into this. I have been out of RC for a long time after selling off all my 1/8th scale nitro buggy stuff that I used to race.

Anyway........here's the list of parts I wound up using. I'll try to update as I change stuff.

CDW MOA chassis
Berg Axles
Clocked 30 degrees front and rear
CKRC BTA knuckles and tie rod
CKRC rear axle lockouts
CKRC clamping hexes
CKRC middle bent lowers
Axial upper links
CKRC threaded aluminum shocks
Multiple Springs
2x Tekkin FXRs
2x Tekkin handwound 55T motors
13T pinion up front and 12T pinion in the rear
6EX radio
Castle BEC
Airtronics 94780 for steering with a custom steering mount
Vanquish comp revolvers
Proline G-8 chisels

And some pictures....though they aren't the best.

Setting the steering up is what gave me the biggest fit so far.
I wanted a plate that would sit on top of the axle with nothing extra underneath and would act as a guide to inhibit tie rod twisting.

I drew some things up and cut a template.

Then I cut out a couple of plates.

Then I got to work making everything fit. I drilled and tapped a hole in the top of the long side axle tube as a third hole and I fit and cut and fit and cut.

And I kept the other plate either as a spare or to use to mount the battery on the rear axle.

Or I might mount it up on the arms.

That's about it so far. I welcome input and help where ever I can get it.

Looks like a pretty good start.

I like that chassis, and nice thinking outside the box on the steering setup.

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but your ride hight looks a bit tall to me. How long are those shocks?

They are like 110mm and the springs inside are getting trimmed once I get everything mounted. With it pushed down to where I want it, it sits a bit lower.

I really like that chassis. Glad to see another in our group making the switch.

Get it ready for the weekend.

I'm working hard to have it ready but I'm quite busy this week with 1:1 scale stuff getting ready for the several competitions coming up.

Who needs sleep?

Did some wiring today. I'm not great at soldering....but I'm getting better.

Came together pretty well. I'm still working on the shocks a bit. It wants to walk up the suspension a lot.

Nice! I just finished a Berg yesterday with a bunch of CKRC stuff and it's pretty sweet. Yours looks good.

Thanks. I'm having some trouble getting my suspension dialed in. It wants to load and unload when the rear axle and front axle drive into or away from each other. It make climbing rough.

I like the custom fab work.
scary amount of articulation; that will change once you take it to the rocks

too much flex. limit the shocks, or get shorter ones etc. you might be able to use nitro fuel line to limit the travel a bit. also try to position your upper links parallel to the ground and flip your shocks upside down if you can. easy fix

What does flipping the shocks do?

I have moved the uppers around a good bit and it still does the same thing. If I limit the extension of the shocks it will still do the same thing.....it will just do it less. Is this what everyone is doing. It seems like a waste of good flex. But i'm still trying to get out of the 1:1 offroading mindset.

Turn you sound off before watching the video.

How much shock travel are you guys running? How stiff should my springs be?

I can't see your video right now on my phone and I'm no expert, but this is what I would try based on what I've learned here.

Limit your shocks by putting a lenght of fuel tubing on the sock shaft inside the shocks under the piston. Limit them till you have around 3-3.5" of ground clerance at the skid plate.

Mount your upper links so that they are parallel to the ground.

Mount your upper links at the chassis end directly above your lower link mount if you can.

Shoot for about 45 degrees of flex before you lift a tire. If you can put a front tire up on a 12oz. Soda can without lifting a tire you're about right but you don't really want any more flex than that.

30wt oil and fairly soft spring. I put harder springs in it and it didn't help much. I have a different set of shocks all together that i'm limiting and putting stiffer springs on.

get you shock height and ride height settled by limiting the shocks and adusting your link placement then work on your spring rate and oil weight

As others said. You really need to limit the shocks so that they do not pull out like that under throttle. It works for some but too much is a problem. My hustler clod did the same thing once I got up to a rock. Only moved like 1/2" on mine though. Mine sits at slight droop but does not lift. At full extension you want no more that 4". If that. At ride height under 3.5"

Your links look to be alright where they are. Just need to get rid of the droop.

hey Crawlfishstu,
did you ever take those shocks apart?

I think (not sure) that if you put your spring(s) under the damper valve as opposed to on top of it, that will set you shocks up droop style and that should help.

You may need to lengthen the uppers as well so that they are not on the same swing as the lowers. Cant really tell from the pics. I see you changed the links since the beginning of the thread.
