Default 32p spur/pinion questions

So FOFF looked like way too much fun not to build one right freakin now! I will be hitting the sand and gravel pits around here and want to go with the 32p for durability. So here are my questions: I've seen that 56/16 is a popular combo, so what brand's plastic spur gears seem to be the most durable? Part number? Any mods required for fitment? Finally, would it be worthwhile to go metal for the spur right off the get and forget about plastic gears? Looking to those of you out there who have the experience I'm trying to gain for some much needed info. Thanks, tbilz

I just put on a Traxxas 54T with a RR 12T pinion.
Faster than the Axial gear set but I want more.
Gonna try a 14T pinion next or a 52 spur.
Believe the spur was for the Jato.

I'm a big fan of the kimbrough precision 32p gears. They bolt right up and are tough as nails, just make sure you're not ordering the traxxas specific gears. I'm currently running a 50t spur/20t pinion on 3s with my castle 1406 4 pole 4600kv and it's completely ballistic.

I knew other people here wanted to know these same things. I appreciate the info from all who offered it. Got some unexpected money today that will soon be taking on the form of a kick ass foff rig. Time to get some air under the tires! Thanks again.

48 pitch don't handle my abuse level at all...I only run 32 pitch now for foff...and they hold up great. The part numbers I listed are 32 pitch gears.

87 / 20 = 4.35:1 ratio

54 / 18 = 3.0:1 ratio

Around a 33% increase in speed.
Switch to 3s for another 50% increase.
5700kv on 7.4volt is 42180 motor rpms.
5700kv on 11.1volt is 63270 motor rpms, 70000 at full battery peak.

Your best spurs gear will be the machined ones.
The molded ones always have a bit of eccentricity between the mounting hole and the gear pitch, makes for a wobbly spur gear.

Just curious why you say that, I picked up a couple Kimbrough 68T 32 pitch gears before I saw this thread. They say "For Traxxas Gas RTRs" but the bolt pattern matches the stock Axial spur perfectly. The hole in the center is a tight fit on the slipper but it will fit.

I'm not sure on the big gears like the 68t, but on the 40's and 50's the holes have to be enlarged to line up as the bolt circle is different. The axial is the same as the standard kimbrough precision and associated I believe.

Thanks, just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something important. the 68T is the smallest my LHS had so I grabbed a 20T pinion. That'll give me a 3.4:1 ratio if it fits.

I just realized the brainfart I had, the spur is too big and won't clear the driveshaft, guess I'll need the smaller spur/pinion combo. Thanks....
