| Another SCX10 FOFF
Been lurking and reading for a while, got some good ideas, put them to use, and I'm finally ready to share. No videos yet, but plenty of pics! I started with a Honcho kit and put it together all stock, but with a Mamba Max Pro and Castle 6900 brushless system. It was completely overpowered, but damn fun! ...for about 2 packs, anyway. 1.9's and the stock ride height were totally unstable at speed. With 2.2's and a wider stance it was drivable, but still spent a lot of time on it's roof. I had to get it lower. FOFF was my plan from the start, so I quickly gave up on the stock configuration and started tearing it down. I pulled the back end in with Axial links, moved the front shock hoops to the forward pair of holes and pushed the front axle out with RC4WD links and some salvaged CR01 parts. Once I got to a wheelbase I liked, I measured the spacing and ordered Punisher shafts front and rear. After the shafts were in place I went about figuring out the steering situation; no small task. In the end I pretty much just copied Bender's set up. To keep the weight low and forward you end up with the servo and battery fighting for the same space. The battery is where the weight is, so logically it's the servo that has to move...somewhere. I had pushed the axle right past the front of the chassis so the servo had to go behind the axle...somewhere. I messed with all sorts of options before noticing that the holes from the original shock hoop location are spaced exactly the same as the servo plate mounting holes and it bolted right up with no mods except a simple 2mm spacer. Then it was just a matter of running links back and forth through the jumble of suspension links and oversized drive shaft mess all moving up and down with the bumps while the servo was fixed. I still wasn't sure it would work, but a few spacers and short pipes later and I got it all to clear with almost 3/4" of suspension travel. Sooo shiny... As with Bender's FOFF, steering is a bit limited. Button head screws will give me a couple more mm, but for now it's the cap screws that are hitting. Oh, and of course there's paddles all around. I went with an Xtreme Racing Rock Reeper Crawler Body, which is a bit narrow so I didn't have to cut it in half like Bender did ;) The wheelbase was way short too, so the back wheel wells are wacky, but I think it looks OK. Upgrades in the mail: A HiTec 645MG to replace the crappy Futaba servo Axial 36/14 gear sets front and rear A couple 32p spur and pinion options to get the gearing right ...suggestions? Now it's just a matter of having some fun beating it up and breaking it until I've got all the weak points figured out! I've already ripped the 3 link connection out popping wheelies across the living room, so that's going to have to go. I'm thinking 4-link, but it looks like the Axial 4 link will be bumping the frame. More trial and error, I guess. Hopefully there will be some carnage videos soon. |

Nice start and lots of fun. Why does it look like the front axle is turned just a little. Not the steering but the whole axle. no big deal ............. Evan |

Seems likely, but I'm not too worried about that in the sand.

Still no video. Haven't even found any sand yet :/ The tires are Panther Paddles and the wheelbase is 12.75". 140mm links in front and 74.5mm in the rear. |

It's been almost a year...better late than never? Finally to the beach a couple weekends ago and beat it for two packs before I smacked it off a rock (last scene). There WILL be more. |

Oh, it fixed fine! I busted one plastic C hub and the plastic Y piece on the 3-link. I already had aluminum C hubs, carriers, and a machined Y for the 3-link so it only took like 20 minutes all around.
