Default R1 Weak Points?

I am building a new 2.2 rig to enter for TTC. I will be running a BR-XL on 4S with either a 10T puller or 35T handwound. Still deciding.

One of my ideas was to build an R1 with upgraded shafts and knuckles/hubs but looking at the specs I am a bit worried about the axle gears and tranny gears. I doubt the stock ones will hold up that long and I do not see any options for steel gears.

My other idea was to reuse one of my all metal Axial trannys and throw on a pair of Axial axles as well and use them with a used RC4WD Rock Rider chassis.

What are known weakpoints on the R1 and are there upgrades for it?

The only thing I have been able to break in 5 months is driveshafts! I went with Junfac upgrade and had no other problems ever since.

Yeah our club's moderator down here in Houston has one and it looks awesome.

I have an extra bullet proof SCX10 that I can tear down and reuse the upgraded parts into a new DMG tuber for a TTC build....or go with an R1?

I think with the simplicity of the Axial it might be tougher....any opinions?

ive been beating the hell out of my R1 with the stock tranny gears and portals and they're still good ..... just opened them up a few days back and no signs of breakage til now .... had mine for about 5 months now running it on 3s around 4 - 8 times a week for 45 minutes per session!!!

the R1 in stock form does have its flaws though .... but is very much capable of doing what it needs to do without breaking parts (except for the driveshafts as mentioned by OSO787)

the options that axial offers however is still incomparable!!!

So a few months on and a few TTC rigs built on these axles, any issues?

The axles are great. I am running mine on 3s (had a 13.5 novak in once too), and no problems yet. I since went down to a 27T brushed...

Run 'em!

I had a few bearings in the portals go south, broken a few inner dogbones and rounded out the final gear at the output shaft a couple times.

All due to velineon 3500 on 3s with paddles and as much gear as I could put in it.
Lot's of tumbles and throttle trying to get it back on the tires.

So for most, I'd say it's more than durable for crawling.

The front halfshafts suck. Anyone found a stronger replacement?
