Have got an R1 and love it but think stock its a jack of all trades rather than a master of one.
With some tweaking like i did you can make I think very capable in your chosen route though.

Tyres!!!!!!!!!!!! change the tires

Add wheel weights too.

Then maybe the high clearance links that would get it low, heavy and grippy a nice way to start.

The shocks are actually very good. If you are crawling set to droop!
Also when tightening up, if you just use the supplied plastic spanner they will leak. I use an adjustable spanner to give them an extra half turn or so which has stopped the leaking. Common problem that.

When i made my gmade shocks ,i used PTFE tape (plumbing tape) on the threads to get a good seal. They haven't leaked yet (fingers crossed). As Northenerbill says the plastic spanner isn't much 'kop'
When i first got mine, i set it up as a rock racer.I went out with some of the lads on a scale run. There were scx10's, hbo rockfighter, cr-01's and a dingo. The R-1 did everthing they could and a lot more... It may of been a bit unfair but it outclassed them all....

Have some 3mm washers available. These are needed to stop the top of the shock from sliding off the ball when fitted to the car. It's not a pop on fit, it's a slide on fit onto the ball

It surprised everyone including me, the video does not show how vertical and wet and muddy that climb was.
We tried that hill as a laugh expecting no one to make it. The xr10 went first and made it just, I followed and did it at the same pace wow!
His xr10 is new and totally totally stock so once he's weighted it and played around with it a bit it will blow the R1 away but it's a nice bench mark to aim for.

Combine them together and they work really well. It is a great basher rig and crawls way beyond what I expected when I built it.Southern Buggy on the Cheap
