Default 1.9 KOH R1 project

I picked up this R1 project- R1 cage, scx tranny and what was advertised as scx axles. Had some 2.2 bomber takeoffs and axle extenders too. When I started digging into it, things started looking not too rosy.

Turns out they are Redcat axles, and in crummy shape too. This is not how dogbones work-

Left side chubs on both sides? Not so good

Time to start throwing money at this thing. Rear axle is staying as is, has the Redcat locker and HR lockouts. Front axle gets all new axial based parts, only saving the housing and ring/pinion. New scx10 cvds vs redcat axle shafts-

New scx10 chubs, needed to extend the hole into a slot to fit-

New scx10 HR locker, bolts directly to the redcat ring gear

Here's the axle all greased up and assembled, added a vanquish wraith servo mount, direct fit-

Got my hands on a new R1 tranny and gmade delrin skid. I'll be using the Redcat driveshafts, they are similar to the gmade shafts but with steel universals. Having owned a sawback in the past, I have no love for the gmade shafts. Here's the back mocked up-

After playing with the shocks and links, and shaving a bit from the driveshafts, it's a roller!

I'm giving these cheapo austar tires/wheels a shot, initial inspection finds them nice and soft and of decent quality for the price, but I'll save final judgement for the rocks. Shocks are setup 60/40 droop/spring up front and 40/60 in back. I picked up the gmade shock tower braces too.

I'm digging into my bag of tricks to avoid having to bolt these aluminum body panels on. I don't know what kind of tiny Korean hands they're working with over at Gmade but it's damn frustrating. Top panels are getting these speed nuts slightly trimmed down-

Sides are getting a combination of 4-40 threaded inserts and push fasteners

Have you ever heard that saying- "When life gives you lemons, paint that sh!t gold"?

Wrapping it up, added a LED bar that slots in nicely between the shocks. I have a tamiya driver figure to paint and that's about it.

First run went crappy, front axle busted at the link/shock hangers. Tried to hop a gap between rocks and it was too much for the little bastard. Replaced the front axle housing with an alloy xtra speed. What a joke, I had to remove all the paint and quite a bit of aluminum to get the chubs to slide on. Got it back together and fingers crossed the second run will be better. It is a fun little bugger for sure, I think it needs a few more teeth on the pinion for more scoot.

How did the tires work out for you?
They sure look tall for 1.9" Not too much side-flex?

I'm no expert, but for the price they are great. Nice and soft without too much side flex. Perfect for the non-competitive trailing/crawling I built this for.

I've got a set of those carted but just can't seem to get the courage to spend the $13 or so. Although if immediately mount them on something.
