Default Kyosho Rock Force or Losi Mini Rock Crawler?

hi all..

im currently looking into getting my first "real" crawler..
previously had the Tamiya TXT, but it's been sold now.

i liked the Kyosho RF due to the solid build quality, but my second option is the MRC Losi..

my budget is basically around USD500 for a complete set, inclusive of charger and all necessary stuff to get the hobby going.
the Kyosho RF can be had for approx USD300 here..unfortunately MRC is pretty expensive for about the same price as the Kyosho.

im located in Tokyo Japan, and wont have much oppurtunity to go out of town..as such im looking to play the crawler inside my small little apartment.

appreciate for any advice..

cheers

I'd think you could get the mrc off ebay much cheaper....

Being in Japan its gonna be hard to get parts for the MRC, you may want to think about that too. Also, you may want to consider a CR-01, there are lots of parts for it here and you can get a kit for under 20,000 yen I think.

Defender.

Yep, you're spot on regarding the availability of MRC parts in Japan.
As a matter of fact, i was hunting for it at RC Champ last week but couldn't find anything on MRC at all, not a single bit of spare part

Well, as for Kyosho RF, the High Speed worm gears are always out of stock especially in Tokyo! and im wondering why!

I do love the RF, for the built quality, but as mentioned by the experience crawlers, the RF is just an average crawler with a high price.
CR01 looks toyish. Out of the box, it seemed like its hobby is to topple over and not crawl

that kind of put me in a dilemma.

JOOTZ,

あなたは 日本人ですか?

Cheers to all and do keep the opinions coming!

Thats kinda comparing apples to oranges. Do you want a 1.9 or a 2.2 crawler?

rm25x,

i guess you're right..an apple to orange comparison
bummer eh?

im tempted with the 1.9 scale. however the MRC is quite a rare beast here in Japan. even popular RC shops in Tokyo hardly have any stock for them. another observation is MRC is kinda weak (cheaper parts, plastics etc) out of the box compared to RF.

currently im in the look out for a used MRC (well, modified ones - preferably with a tube style chassis, but they're kinda hard to come by apparently)

the Kyosho RF has always been my favourite.
but it's a 2.2 and perhaps a little too big for my "rabbit house" apartment??

im trying to keep the cost as low as possible, budget is approx USD500.00 inclusive of ESC, motor, battery and charger. i intend to use my JR 9CH TX/RX for the crawler. hopefully it works

the RF kit is approx USD300 at the moment.
a balance of USD200 for ESC/Motor combo and perhaps some basic Lipo charger+battery.

what do you guys suggest?

I would wait on the 1/10 losi. They still have a few bugs to work out. Check out the Losi Comp crawler section on this site.

Also, how about an Axial? Its not the cheapest kit to find here, but the Tam Tam near me is starting to get a good supply of aftermarket and replacements parts for that too.

btw Defender..

regarding Tam Tam..the only Tam Tam i knew is located on the 2nd floor along Akihabara, which has nothing but some static model cars, and miniature train sets. Are they any other Tam Tam stores in Tokyo with some serious RC stuff? care to send me a link?

im tempted by the 1/10 Losi crawler. out of the box, it seemed to be a better crawler than the RF, especially with the integrated dig system. looks cool too..but in Japan prices for Losi are way higher than usual (approx USD380 for the Losi 1/10 kit)

hmm..decision ne.
tough choice!

cheers

Any of ya'll from Japan want to help an American out with picking up an RC that is only available to Japan?

And as far as your situation I would pick the MRC from the two choices. But since you dont have a good availability of parts for the MRC I would go with a CR-01.

ごめん。。didn't notice that you were addressing Jootz..lol

Yeah the TamTam near me is pretty big with a wide variety of rc stuff.

The one I go to is in Sagamihara, maybe about a 45min train ride from Shinjuku.

bigdodge88.
well, you're right. in terms of good availability of parts, you can't go wrong with a CR01 (or namely TAMIYA products) especially in Japan.
though Im not so sure about Kyosho. the high speed worm gears are scarce and hard to come by as far as i observe, even in Tokyo.
that surprises me.

Axial is getting popular too, i do see quite a number of option parts and some chassis kits compare to 3months ago.

If Axial is growing I would definately recommend the RTC that just came out. They have really made those very nice and crawl well right out of the box.

Defender..
thanks for the link.
Sagamihara as in Hachioji prefecture? wow..that's quite a distance from where im located now:-(

here are my personal thoughts:

MRC - ideal, but parts are hard to come by especially in Japan
RF - my preferred choice for the moment (well, frankly im a little biased towards Kyosho..)
Losi 1/10 - another good choice, but lack of spare parts, similar as MRC.
Axial - great crawler, but i need something a little xtraordinary!
CR01 - scale looks, great instruction and support. Tamiya quality - possibly a decent crawler out of the box (though i think due to its high CG, it topples rather easily)
