| Rock crawlin inside
Hey everyone this is for the ones who live in snow country, We already have had our first snow and has stopped me from rock crawlin, so I was wondering if anyone ever made a course inside. Maybe fake rocks or something inexpensive... If anyone has a good idea let me know Because I hate not being able to crawl

I live in an old mining town, so there are rocks galore to go collect, so that is what we did. Other than that, I would say dark clothes, ski mask, and hit up a subdivision at night! lol, j/k

perhaps you could make some out of fiberglass, mold it the way you want.. i dont know enough about 'glass, but i am sure there is a way to make it rough to have some traction..

| Still Thinking
Well thank you all for your good idea's I am still thinking of how it can be done. since the wife will not go for Rocks in the house LOL, I was thinking of putting it on plywood so I can lift it up and put it away, so It would need to be light weight. Now the Fiberglass idea might work, I could use foam or some type of filling, make the design then cover with fiberglass to make it solid

I think I would just go get some chicken wire from the hardware store and some wire cutters, or maybe you could get away with some foam insulation. You might want to think about plaster of paris...it is available at even walmart, and I think it would be strong enough if it were thick. It is heavy though, but I am sure it is easier to work with than fiberglass, and you could even get some texture to the rocks for more grip.

Yea, try some plaster of paris reinforced with chicken wire. I think that would work well.

Lust take a big chunk of foam, like the hard stuff, and use a grinder to take it down to size. Its the type of foam that encases electromics like a computer in the box. |

if you have alot of time on your hands, you could build something like most model train enthusiasts: Paper machey (?spelling? ).. go to hobby lobby... |

There are several sites that show you how to build faux rocks for watergardens. These would look and work great.

I just took some cut up logs used for a fire place and put them on a sheet of plywood. Then when you get bored move them around and you have a new course. Works great.

I just use couch and chair cushions. They are not solid like rocks but it's still a blast and easy to clean up. |

I use about 15 pieces of firewood (wood stove in house) and make a course, drive over a few times, and it constantly changes. Cheap entertainment, and keeps me warm at the same time.

I was talking to my wife about bringing rocks inside & here is what she came up with.(keep in mind this will be expensive but not like buying "diamonds") What you will need: Good stuff expandable foam; $4.55/can Tarp or plywood for base. (optional) Speckle stone paint $6.50/can Chicken wire (support & shape) Sand, gravel & clear silicone to hold it in place Filler ie: boxes, milk crates, old shoes etc... You could scatter filler & make shapes w/ chicken wire then cover everything w/ the foam as thick as you like. When it is cured you could cut & shape it. When you get all of your ledges, bowls, stairs & cracks cut and shaped, you could smear silicone in different areas and cover w/ gravel and or sand. Then when it has cured you could speckle paint everything. I rent for now so this will have to wait... When we buy our house my garage WILL have this done to it. I picture 3-4 ft vertical climbs & maybe even a tunnel. If I have enough room I may even get some yard pond stuff & put a creek through it. LOL Last edited by raytard; 12-05-2005 at 02:47 PM. |
