Default Someone With a Lathe

I'm looking for someone willing to volunteer time and material for a very simple project. I am helping "KNIFE" get his new DX7 set up for his use. The last items needed to complete this project are two stick extensions. They should be made from one inch solid round aluminum stock, Three inches long with a .5" hole drilled two inches deep on one end. The other end should have a slight taper and a hole threaded for 4mm, the thread size of the sticks on a DX7.

In case you missed his thread about a month ago, he is a paralyzed Marine who used to compete in the 1:1 crawler world. He is now getting into RC. I have made a few mods to the radio but I can't find anyone local to do this machine work. I too am in a wheelchair and have to rely on public trans so finding a machine shop has been a real challenge.

Please let me know if you can lend a hand!

Yes...I will try my luck with Draw and try to create something. The thread size is 4mm. I have confirmed that. I will get back to you during the day with some sort of drawing and thanks!

Hi,

I am happy to help you sketch this up. I have not added dimensions to this drawing but wanted to capture the concept first. Does this look about right?

Thanks,
Serge

Wow! Yes...exactly! I just spent 1/2 hour in Paint trying to come with something but your concept is right on the money. Your in my brain, man!!

The stock is 1" aluminum round rod. The large hole is .5" in dia. and 2" deep.

The small hole on the tapered end is 4mm threaded for the DX7 sticks. The depth of the threaded hole should be 1" so it will punch through the stock into the larger hole. The depth of the taper is not critical and is for aesthetics. Of course all edges must be chamferred.

This fellow wheres gloves that each have a pencil which sticks out about two inches. He will need to insert this pencils into the .5" holes to operate the DX7s sticks. Keep in mind he is paralyzed from the chest down and has VERY limited use of arms, hands and fingers.

If you would fine tune the drawing and insert the dimensions, we could be well on the way to completing this project. You are the man!!

Here's my drawing. A bit embarrassed I must say I am but since I took the time to draw it, might as well show it.

I'll do it. I have 3 lathes at my disposal at any time. I own the business. Glad to help any guy who defended our country. I happen to have the 1" round in my garage. I could do it this evening when I get home.

Has any one been assigned the job? I'll need an address to send it to. Lastly...I have white delrin and black delrin in 1".

No one has been assigned the job until now! I'll take you up on the offer. No offense to anyone else. You seem raring to go! I believe aluminum would be best because it's lighter isn't it? Anyway I will assume that you get the gist from the drawings. I'll PM you the address and thank you so much for the quickness of your offer. Timing has really been an issue with this project!

Excellent, I'll start now. You want a standard 4mm thread, correct? That is 4 mm x 0.7 pitch. thats is coarse thread. there is a fine one too. 4mm x .75. EVERYTHING I do in metric is coarse thread, normally. I'll make it assuming its all standard. When it comes time to tap the hole, i'll check my messages or the forum to see.

Glad to help!

I already have it packaged up, so no, no pictures. Its polished and sweet lookin', perhaps Tailrotorblade can post one up when he gets it. I'm going to try and go to the PO today after work. I hope.

I'm speechless! I must say though I am unsure if the stick thread is considered coarse. We'll find out but I'm thinking it is fine. Did you get my PM Ben?
