| Short Wheelbase Concept
I've been kicking around the idea of a shorter wheelbase rig. I did a search that did not turn up much but I assume you some of you guys have done it. What are some drawbacks to shortening it up? So far I can see you'll have a bit less articulation, possibly a higher cog under some conditions, harder to climb obstacles of a certain height. On the plus side, less likely to get stuck on the belly and better turning radius. I've seen some builds with 12" and upper 11" range wheelbase but I was thinking even around 10" or possibly less. |

Put some 2.2's on a MRC and see how you like it. I don't think you will. A shorter wheelbase will be more unstable ascending and descending. The only potential upside would be an improved turning radius, but with dig that's really a non-issue. |

That's a good idea. By unstable you mean fipping over?

In a comp rig, you're gonna get stuck on those steep climbs. In the scaler world though, oh man. I just shrunk my SCX-10 down to like 10 1/2 inches to fit a LR3 body and it drives freakin. sah. weet. So you talking about a comp'r or scaler? |

A small benefit would be less hanging on the skid...

No I was thinking a comp rig but now that you mention it a scaler would be pretty interesting. I was thinking bodiless 2.2 comp rig but with a custom chassis and shorter wheelbase but I don't want to reinvent the wheel or go through the all that effort to build a turd. |

If you're just looking for a better turning radius, use dig and/or have the rear axle narrower than the front. Only downfall to that is a possibility of it being a bit less stable on an off camber situation.

It's been done, and I have done it. My Fun Buggy project was a scale-ish Bastard jr. tuber, it runs droop but is very well ballanced and works awesome. Still tho, like Eee Pee said, climbs can be hindered with out the extended wheel base.\ the rig could compete on courses where there's a lot of off camber and sharp turns, but grabbing the ledges of courses that are set up for 12.5" crawlers is it's down fall. 1st pic shows the rig. 2nd pic shows why it can't cut it. |
