Default Kids Radio? 2.4Ghz

Does any one make a Jr. Sized, Kids Sized, or even a smaller Radio?

If no one makes one... Post up if you think you could use one?

My son is 4yr and has small hands. He has no problem with driving slow and controlling it. But he has to reposition hands to turn the wheel or hit Reverse. He has to use two hands just to control the Throttle.

It would be great if Spektum and Fubata would produce a Jr. Sized radio.

I would love for my son to drive my comp rig, but a Dx3R is way to big for him and expensive. A DX3E Mini would be great.

might not be able to get a hand radio, but perhaps you could mod a small one from a radio shack toy or something similar. It would be a pretty penny investment, but you could transfer the equipment from a Spectrum stick radio over to the smaller one.
I've got one from an old tyco truck you could try.

I am in the same boat. My 5 y/o has small hands and can drive his slash pretty well but has to turn the controller around to use reverse.

I dont know of any out of the box "mini" radios.

I would say that one of the RTR transmitters that come with the MRC or any of the other Losi RTR's that are 2.4 would probably be a good starting point because they are so cheap that they are basically disposable.

You could then cut the whole grip section off and replace it with some smaller plastic tube to keep it light and help them get their hand around it. Obviously you could move the grip section towards the trigger a bit and if you take a section out of the trigger you could glue it back on closer to the other side so they can get to reverse easier. Throw a smaller wheel on there and call it a day.

The only problem is that the RTR radios dont have epa's.

There's definitely a need for smaller tx's, I take my buddies kids to comps with me (8&12), and the LNC radio's are a little big for good throttle control, esp. the younger one. Dialing a lot of throttle curve into a MMP helped the oldest, hopefully the sidewinder I just put into the youngest truck helps him the same. His dad would definitely buy a smaller tx for him if we could find one.

Is it the handle size or trigger position that is the problem or both.

Distance of trigger from handle mostly, and then handle size also. It's hard for a small hand to hold the handle and still reach the trigger.

i never thought about a kids radio... call spectrum and tell them that... and if and if any one else can just to help people know that they want them they may possably make one.

I went through the same thing Jarrod. My son started driving at the same age and we tried everything. I even tried using a twin stick from a traxxas boat because it was undersized.

The thing we found best was a DX2.0 or DX3.0 because the grip was the slimmest of the bunch. He still even had to use two hands for for reverse, because his fingers weren't long enough to make the throw.

I found out the same thing. Papabash came over and he had a DX3 not the DX3.0. Logan seemed to drive better with it then my DX3R.

You would think this kid of Hobby. There would be such a thing as a Jr. Radio... Shot what Kid under 7yr doesn't like RC's...

When my son was 4 we had the same problems. I've been a Futaba guy since the 80's but a friend of mine had an Airtronics VT2P that my boy could actually hold onto. We did some tweaking on the brake side of the trigger and used fuel tubing to make the finger area smaller. It worked okay but not great. Definitely smaller than his old Mini-T radio was.

i got an old 2 stick out and set it up on a rc10t for my kids.. they set it on there lap and do very well with it.. just a thought, but the game has changed and you really do need to be able to walk with it while crawling..maybe a 2 stick and a neck strap.

My 5 year old has small hands but can work all the radios I have. I noticed that when he uses reverse he slips his finger to the backside of the trigger and pushes it, then flips his finger back to where it should be.... he's fast enough at it now that he can hit forward and reverse as fast as I can.

I'll try to snap some video of him driving his rig, just to see how he does it.

Well i'm building full size radios right now, but once i get them figured out i'll attempt my plastic work skills and make a small handle then replace a handle on something else.

My 6 YO does the same thing. He has real good luck with the TX that came with his Micro Crawler and does OK with my DX3E.

the spektrum dx3s has different rubber inserts to change grip size, i dont think the trigger is as far away from the grip as it is on a dx2.0
