| narrowing a crawler stance ???
I've been bouncing this around in my head. Is there a way to shorten the axle housing length? I saw this concept on the new axial crawler. And thought that , the shortened would have some advantage. The front, Im leaving alone.for obvious reasons. Or using a narrower wheel tire set up for the rear housing???

| Shorter rear
I recently narrowed the rear axle on my Berg V2 and found that it made quite the difference. I kept the front wide but the narrow rear allows an easier pass through narrow gates and sharp turn gates. It can be done pretty easily with wheels with a low offset. I used Vanquish SLWs with 350 offset hubs.

I just run berg offset wheels on the rear. I wouldn't want to be any narrower than that. Sidehilling becomes a problem the narrower ya go.

I agree the wheels are the easiest way to narrow it.

That's what I was hoping for. How do you cope with the side hilling problem? Where can I get the Berg off set wheels? or just look at thier web sit?? Or could a link be posted, Thanks.

I too was looking into this. wheels are the answer. I have berg offset wheels now and it definately makes a difference in the way it drives. Now i need weigh my options for the front. Wheel spacers and the same wheel in a standard axial offset are my options as of now.

how narrow were you thinking? different offset wheels might do the trick. i know a bunch of guys using axial offset in the front and berg in the rear. iave even seen some guys use slash rear beadlocks in the rear |

about 1/4' each side. or half width of a axial wheel. I'm thinking that may give me less trouble or to close to the diff. How far does the slash wheel inset . Traxxas wheels seem to be most inexpensive, I think the HS down the street may have some left overs, before switching to air rc only, i'm bet/ hopeing he'd sell them cheap..A nice selection of thread rod and tubes of different dia. there's nice areo rod ends, turn knuckles, which are light & strong. I was suprised, it's easier make stuff for my rig. He's got carbon tubes. i'm trying to think of some thing to make, tube chasis, maybe.. NO i'm not going to air rc. it's a rich old man's hobby.. lol

Like mentioned, just run a different offset wheel in the rear.

It shouldn't be that hard to find some Traxxas parts around here. After a narrower rear stance, how much does this affect the rear handling ??

On my Bully I run Axial offset in the front and a set of HPI Super Nitro wheels in the rear. Narrows it right up and super light weight. So far the hexes are holding up well too. Most of the RCC vendors can get them for you. |

This might be a bit extreme for what you are doing, but I cam up with a way to narrow them about 2" overall. I am planning a scale Land Rover which I only have around 8" outside wheel to outside wheel in the fenders. I want to use the Axial rears, so I need them narrowed. Keep in mind this has not been completed, but in theory it should work. First remove the straight axle extension on both sides. Cut the end off, only leaving the piece that slides over the axle. The shaft can be done two ways. First is to cut and splice the stock back together with a coupler. The second is to buy one of the thicker shafts and grind the two new flats which go into the diff. Either way you end up with a shortened shaft, that places the bearing at the same location as the front axle. Next, cut a thin piece of metal into a washer with tabs. The washer should be large enough to cover the outside race of the bearing. Bend the tabs down and run the screws through them and the cut off end into the axle. The cut off end pinches the end of the axle where the bearing rides. The washer with tabs keeps the bearing from sliding out. Wes |
