Default best crawler out of the box

I am thinking about getting back into crawling, and wanted to get something that works straight out of the box. My birthday is coming up and my wife wants to get me something that I will use. The last Axial did not work all that well, but it was a shafty. IWill be keeping it and converting it to a scale truck. Now I need the crawler.

Thanks
Doma

If it was me I'd be building an XR10.

for something that you buy, and use all that comes in the box....

Nothing even comes close the the capability of the XR10 strait out the box.

you will need all tronics, and a set of new bearings,

Out of the box, the XR-10 isn't capable at all....it doesn't come with tires.

Ok, ok....my vote is for the XR-10 too

I don't know of any crawlers that work out of the box? Most require assembly and some parts.....

Depending on price range there's a nice berg on ebay for $350 buy it now. Then Id go to a XR10, then either one of the Losi crawlers. In all reality it depends on if you plan on just playing around or if you plan on doing some comps

I am not a comp guy, but then again, having a ride that CAN compete would be rather fun. Maybe the best of both worlds?

Well, if you are looking for a true out of the box crawler I'd go with the Losi Night Crawler. Very capable out of the box, good electronics and 2.4ghz radio and only need to buy batteries and a charger, the rest is included.

If you don't mind spending some more money up front and don't mind putting a kit together, then the XR10 would be my choice. Just have to buy all the other necessary parts to finish the rig but nothing difficult or too expensive.

Is it better to go with a used rig or something brand new? I'm inclined to go with new, just because I want to use the rig inside but buying someone's old rig with all the kinks worked out and giving it a throrough cleaning may be the way to go. How often to clean, used crawlers go on sale anyway?

Well every time i have sold my old rock crawlers they was as clean as they was when i bought them besides of course the scratches but i would tear it down and clean it!! makes for a better buy?? lol

But my 2 cents is to just buy a new one for the fact no wear and tear already and then you can do what you want with it instead of buying a used one that's already moded and u will have to change it to your likings????

Take money into account though. You will get much more for your money buying used. That being said, if you buy new you can get exactly what you want. I bought my first rig used waaaay back, and still run it today without issues

Thanks for the advice, I get the feeling that maybe the crawlers take better care of their stuff than the truggy/buggy guys anyway seeing as there aren't any jumps, tricks or warp speed on the scalers.

That all the parts can be upgraded just gives me an excuse if something wears out too

Damn near it daily man.. I awaited getting my time in to get into the classifieds, and it's been worth it..

I missed a few good deals, but have an awesome deal in the works for a rig I'll probably run forever.. At a great price, and the way I need it.. I have a motor/esc combo to use, just need everything else, and within 4 days found a sweet price on a rig and talked with the seller extensively.

Crawlers do tend to be better taken care of, and I would jump to say that no, they're not as abused as other forms of RC's. Plus consider with a used crawler, even if someone is using Shocks A and you prefer shocks B, well you can always modify or just adjust them in one of 100 ways to find something more to your liking.

Don't be scared of the used market. If you only knew how much used gear was sold on this forum everyday it would boggle your mind.

That used berg I refered too....It got me all the way to nationals and I'm still running the chassis, shocks, and links it came with....

For out of the box, add batteries and go, I recommend the Losi Night Crawler. You can get it RTR and it performs very well, I love mine.

Meffie and Darkseide,

Thanks for the insider tips! I wait eagerly! As a principle, I won't purchase a 'star' just yet, but if I really get into crawling I'll see what I can do!

I only worry that on sight of all those nice rigs I may be tempted to purchase something bigger and more expensive than I originally intended.
