Default Best Application for a Rock Racer?

I'm looking for a more dual-purpose rig, like a KOH style rig that can hit the go-fast stuff then slow down and hit the rocks. What would be a good application for this? I've seen a few different approaches but most are basically shaft driven rigs with good suspension and either a Summit trans or use wheelspeed to get up most obstacles.

I know some people would start with a tube chassis but I'm not sure if it would hold up. I've only had a handful of crawlers and I'm addicted to fast stuff too so I really want to build a dual-purpose rig. I've thought of the Summit but it's more of a monster truck with lockers and low range. Fun, but not realistic and anybody can snag one off the shelf. Thoughts?

I want something similar to the Jimmy's 4x4 rigs-

Why wouldn't a tube chassis hold up? When built properly, I don't think you could get anything stronger...

search the scale rigs section it should give you some good ideas. my suggestion, (and this is what I would do if I had the money) is get a summit tranny and a set of Gmade R1 axles, grab some brake tubing and a welder and let the sparks fly. or buy a chassis from someone.

Yes, exactly my point. Just wondering if there is a better option or what I should look for. Brake line, for instance, wouldn't be a good choice, correct?

I'm still new to the whole tube chassis thing with R/Cs...

Right, but that's apples to oranges since they use DOM Chromoly usually...what do the R/C guys use? Do you crawl in Centralia? I'm about an 1/2 hour north of you.

Brake line is a fine choice. I happen to be building a XRRA buggy, and it'll have a 3000kv brushless motor in it when I'm done, so it'll have some speed.

Very nice start! What are you using to weld it together? I noticed you said solder, do you use a torch and some special flux?

I heard that the rock team will be using petrified wood next season. Very controversial...

Do you get yours from the local welding supply? I don't plan on making more than 1 or 2 chassis at a time. It might be better to just get one that's already been bent and welded and go from there.

Wow, really pushing the boundaries these days huh? However much I like when people think outside the box, these guys goes a little too far sometimes. It's like when we first started running large outer diameter rings. Oh man...

How about the MOA rigs? Can they still be competitive without an actual transmission?

No, they suck. Nobody really uses them. They're only popular for nostalgic reasons.

A tube chassis that is designed correclty, and brazed with silve solder and Flux woulod have more strength that you would EVER need. Brazing is pretty easy, just takes a little practice. There are some amazing tube chassis builders on here. It might be worth contacting them.

You'll go through far more lexan bodies with a rock racer than a tuber.
