| delrin and styrene
so I searched with those exact words and only found one thread back in 08' and was wondering if anything new has come about with glueing styrene to delrin, is it possible in the new times or not?

You can glue it, but its not that strong. Styrene is too soft and can only tolerate a light solvent based glue Delrin is an oil based product and doesnt accept adhesion well. |

so how long do you think like plastistruct would last on it then? not saying going balls to the wall throttle kinda thing but for trail rigs and stuff like that, that arent so extreme?

OK, maybe your not getting this. Oil = Non adhesive properties Lightweight open cell plastics = disolvable under high solvent based glues Chances are with plastrucks or Tenax7 It will not bond at all. I did this last year. it lasted 7 seconds You can try E-6000 or super glue, but like I said, I highly doubt it will bond |

I have a delrin box ish, it's got 2 sides open and I was going to use it to hold my esc in it and just glue styrene on to it to close it to make it waterproof(ya ghetto but you use what you got lol) so if glue doesn't work I guess I could just drill some tiny holes and screw the styrene on and add grease to the sides or something

So can I ask you why you just dont get more pieces of styrene? Its cheap enough and most hobby shops carry it in stock. It would be lighter too and easier to style to your needs. Quote:

my lhs doesn't carry it for some odd reason, plus I haven't gotten my debit card from the bank yet so no online purchases unless its paypal and I only have enough styrene to try and make a interior and fender wells and the back of a hilux cab lol edit: they do have styrene but it's in the form of a fence......... and I don't plan on fencing in my esc.... you should try to chemically etch the delrin in order to create a stronger bond, here's a video that explains it a little. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTsVF9nF-3E You might be able to achieve similar results sanding it. As you know delrin is extremely difficult to glue and a mechanical connection is generally preferred. Oh the guy from that video has a blog too: http://benkrasnow.blogspot.com/ I remember reading somewhere on there about a certain type of glue made specifically for it. |

In your case, I would just use "Goop" (thickened silicone adhesive) to "glue" the styrene to the delrin. Not a great choice (Delrin sucks being adhered to as already mentioned) but "Goop" (yes, it's a brand name) will do well enough. I would NOT try this for structural items, but as a quick adhesive/mostly sealant it's OK. |

Instead of looking for styrene at your local "radio control oriented" hobby shop go to your local "model train oriented" hobby shop.
