Default Gearing Question

Hello All, thanks for your wisdom and advice. You are all so helpful. I searched gearing but still have a question.

I'm running an AX-10 (6.2 lbs) and SCX-10 (7.2 lbs). FX-Rs, 3S 11.1v lipo, 45 or 55T integy lathe or stock orange axial motors, CC BEC. Axles are packed w grease.

Since switching to 3S lipo from stick packs, I have been getting a lot of overheating from my motors. They get wicked hot. I break them in by running very slow for about 10 mins. I liked the wheelspeed from 87/20 but dropped to 87/14 for less heat.

I know gearing down reduces strain but how can I get more wheelspeed and less heat? If I got a quality motor (tekin or HH, etc) that is lower turn, say 35T, would that just make the situation worse? Do I need a different ESC? I know a lot of folks on here run similar setups with 35T motors...

How can I get more wheelspeed and less heat?

87/14 is actually perfect for gearing. Im not sure how much wheel speed you want. But generally going to a faster motor and a 3S or 4S for battery.

The integy motors are not bad, but not great either.
You'll see quite a bit difference running a high C rating battery and a 35T motor.

I personally an now running a 13T crawlmaster from HH.
But remember that when you run a motor like that with more power, your wearing brushes faster and your comm. So then you need to maintain your motor more often.

My next step is throwing on a larger cap on my fxr to run 4S
its not recomended by tekin and voids warentee work. But a few people I trust have done it for years with no issues.

So faster motor and better C rating on a battery will help.
Try and go to the largest mah you can fit without sacrificing weight.

I'm running a 30t HH tourqe master pro with 87/17t gearing on 2s and its peferct! pleanty of lowend, and just the right amount wheel speed for me, and if I bump to 3s lipo its too fast. and on 2s it never gets too hot even on hr long runs.

use to run a 35T integy motor...switched to a 45T tekin...that was a difference right there. I am running a 16T/87T combo with a 3S 30C lipo, no motor heat issues..I also don't have the hammer down the whole time.

would love to switch to a 14T puller from HH...
