| 6.25:1 ring/pinion ratio for shafties!!!!
First off............ Maxx axles use a 37t ring gear/13t pinion so that = 2.85:1 axle ratio X-Factor axles use a 43t ring gear/13t pinion so that = 3.31:1 axle ratio Found some alternatives to all the other r/p gears out there. These are from the Duratrax Thunder Quake 8O 50t ring gear http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXBCK0&P=7 8t pinion gear http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXBCJ9&P=7 50t / 8t = 6.25:1 ratio!!! 8O 8O 8O They are a bit pricey but anyone building a custom axle could try these out. Maybe even use the independent suspension from a Thunder Quake and make a solid axle type setup like the e-maxx crawlers do. Heck I'm even wondering if the 8t pinion will fit in my X-Factor axles! Theoretically, that would give me a 5.375:1 ratio! I've read that a lower ring/pinion ratio will help get rid of torque steer in shaft driven crawlers. Hopefully this inspires some people out there. |

I'm thinking that the TQ pinion should work since the shaft size is 6mm.

What about the pitch? Most companies bevel gears are sold as pairs... i.e. A smaller pinion from the same product family will not mesh properly with a bigger spur of the same family. Also, big ass ring gears eat up ground clearance in a hurry. I'm convinced ultra high diff ratios are the way to go though. I think I'll do my next axles with bevel gears and spur/pinions to get at least 10:1. Worm gears at high ratios are way to inefficent. |

I was assuming that the TQ is using a standard 1/8 scale gear pitch. I called Hobbico customer support but couldn't get a definite answer. The guy I talked to told me that he thinks that they're 48 pitch. I'll dig around... :? 1 module comes to mind. |

I have checked around at the lhs's in the area and no one stocks the Thunder Quake gears. At $22 for the pinion I can't justify buying it just to try out on my X-Factor gears. I hope that someone out there that has a TQ could try it against some of the more common r/p gears. Jasoninaugusta, I hope you can find some answers. From what I have seen the xfactor, savage, and mgt pinion gears are all interchangeable. So I would think that the ring gears would be as well......at least when it comes to the gear mesh. They are all 1/8 scale so I can't really see a reason why the Duratrax wouldn't fit. |
