Don't know about Durarod For steel using the cheapest is a big mistake. Cheap brazing rod is very frustrating to use. Harris Safety Silv is very easy to use, but its a little pricey. 1 oz will do 1 tube frame and cost about $15.00 Use the search feature to find more post on the topic |

For aluminum, look into TechnoWeld. It's a product (whose name is somewhat misleading) that uses filler rod to join aluminum, aka brazing. It's rather "new" but I hear it's pretty effective. Still doesn't beat a bead from a TIG weld though. |

so I'm assuming use the harris safety silv on cold rolled steel? and should I use mapp gas not propane? and do I need to use oxygen as well or just the gas? I have a brazing setup that has a single nozzle and two regulators on it here and thats what I'm planning on using. also is brazing fairly strong? (if done correctly) thanks

If done correctly, it should be as strong as a good weld. You don't need the Oxygen with the MAPP, but I use it. The rod heats up a lot faster and so does the material due to the higher temperature. Plus the extra temperature comes in handy when doing other stuff too, like hardening and bending.

ok thanks! now about the harris safety silv...is this what I need or is there something else that works better on cold rolled and does it have flux or do I need separate flux...and as far as cleaning the metal a dremel and a wire wheel will work for this right? basically remove the oils and rough it up a bit? and is brazing like soldering where you heat the metal parts your brazing/soldering and then apply the solder/rod to it and it flows around your joint? thanks again for the info

Yes, cobra...brazing works through capillary action just like soldering...you don't fuse the two metals together as you do when you weld. Most of us use harris white paste flux. |
