Default lead knuckle weights?

There are several brackets for attaching knuckle weight but most weights are brass. Does anyone make lead weights we can attach to those brackets? D-shaped lead weights would be even better.

I have thought about it but decided to let someone else have at it. IMHO the health liabilities make it not worth it from a vendors standpoint.

I agree, the specific gravity of lead is better than brass. Since lead melts at a "reasonably low temp", I make my own weights in a part circle.

I usually make a plaster cast of a brass weight, then pour my own lead weights.

No, I won't make weights for you or anyone else. I don't want to piss off vendors and my work schedule makes being a vendor (myself) means I won't do so.

Sorry

There are restrictions on shipping lead which could make it a bigger headache. Most of the weights you see are machined and that's why you see brass. Machining lead would be interesting, probably blow through it as fast as you can feed, that is if you could buy lead "sheet"

Mcmaster sells lead in different shapes and sizes. http://www.mcmaster.com/#lead/=pm0f6m

That's pretty cool. Never looked at it. A small vendor "staying under the USPS radar" would likely be ok shipping them around.

To check your concern, I went to Amazon and find I could freely order lead fishing weights without any mention of shipping restrictions. I've previously received lead rope without problems. So I think that's a non-issue.

I agree with Charlie that cast weights make more sense than machining them out of stock. You could do minor touch-up machining on the raw casting if necessary. And I doubt there's any health concern working with lead as long as you take precautions, as simple as a well-placed fan. Millions of hobbyists like fishing and gun enthusiasts regularly work with lead. BTW, McMaster's lead sheet seems way too expensive. Meltable lead is free from the local tire shop.

I have no concern making what I need if I can't buy it. It's just that I'd have to start off low on the learning curve.

I can understand making your own weights out of lead but for a vendor to offer "toy car" parts made out of lead is just asking for trouble. Even if you weren't worried about the liability, what are the laws regarding making toys out of lead?

Yes, lead is very easy to shape/form/cast/machine. It also has s SG better than most "available" weight parts.

They sell lead weights for bias in racing why not just put them on a light knuckle weight.

Difficult to manufacture, and a little toxic.

Lighter than Tungsten, as difficult to manufacture, and also a bit toxic.

The obvious option for something very high density, easy to shape and not toxic (actually eatable) is pure Gold!
Only downside is the price tag...

Cast blanks.

Finished product "machined" on a drill press using router and dremel bits. Yes, I fed them by hand.

No, I don't recommend it.

That's when they are no longer toys and are instead, "Adult Collectible Action Vehicles".

It's all in the marketing
