Question Axle/trans grease comparison?.

So I'm getting ready to do a full greasing on some new axles, trans, diff and transfer case. I've been searching and see lots of recommendations for what grease to use. Red & tacky, marine, VP star lube, bad horsie, etc etc.

As expected when searching I found many answers that seem swayed one way or the other from team drivers or sponsors, to all their other stuff is great so why wouldn't their grease be.....

So my question is has anyone actually done a unbiased comparison on some of the vendors and big name greases? To see how it holds up through use and how it breaks down, sling, thickness, side affects etc etc.

As this will be the first I've truly started from a zero greased product and I don't want to use the regular old tamiya or traxxas stuff that comes in a kit as I have I the past. I've got a few bills wrapped up in just the drivetrain...which I'm sure we can all understand is different from the 50.00 stock plastic stuff.....

Any input would be great and yes even if its just a I've used it myself for years, I'd still appreciate it. I want to look at all my options before I just jump in.

All those that you listed are fine...just pick one and use it. It's not critical.

I use Red and Tacky fairly liberally throughout my whole truck. Both diffs, trans, bearings on the inside of the diffs and trans, rear CVDs (enclosed by lockouts) etc. My truck gets G6'd pretty regularly and nearly all of them have mud and water. Despite that, my drivetrain is in really good shape and no rust. Spins super smooth too.

One of the guys in our club uses "Grim Racer Speed Grease"

We play in alot of water and mud & when he took his axles & trans apart for a little PM, & after 6 months of abuse the grease looked like he just put it on. Its water proof , holds up great, and sticks to the gears like glue. He also rebuilds his bearings with it.

Now just about everyone in the club uses it. Just another option for you.

Thanks for the info, do you happen to know of anyone here who may sell it? I see a main and a couple of other retailers carry it but I don't usually deal with them.

Gears are gears. I've got about all the specialty greases available, the only other one I use is the one Norm at Team3six sold. That's because it comes in a convenient squeeze bottle.

Yeah I know gears are gears and I work on 1:1s all day, but I'm just a weirdo about shit like this, lol. I'll use my bearing grease for now just to get up and rolling and I'm going to look into the team3six stuff as convenience sells me any day...

I've been using Amsoil synthetic grease for all my RC trucks. The only reason I use it is because I have a tub of it from when I used to ride motorcycles, and I'm too cheap to buy anything else....Which is really a lame excuse because we all know RC toys cost way more than we think .

I use Castrol Multipurpose bearing grease on everything. I got the tub for free and it works great.

What about silicone grease/lube. I ask this cause in airsoft its pretty much what we all run in the gearboxes in our guns....seems to be super tacky let smooth.

The airsoft stuff is a lil different. I remember it being tacky and extremely light. I've used a synthetic automotive or Lucas red and tacky in my crawlers and no issues.

Wheelworks black-n-tacky! Got a bottle a year and a half ago.. I do Everything with it! Comp rigs, scale rigs, brushless wraith, MIP driveshaft joints, uni's, pocket knife hindges, door hindges, anything that moves or squeakes! Comes in a squeeze bottle. Its on the "liquid" side but stays where you put it and since its not a thick grease, it has less resistants on ur moving parts and motor..

After all I named and the multiple rigs I use it on, that's all I have used..

Well not really when you think about it....axial scx trans is 3 gears for the reduction, differential is a pinion and ring.

Airsoft, motor has pinion then its a 3 gear system for the reduction.

Regardless, it might not be the best stuff. Time will tell, Ive had great luck with it in airsoft so far so Ill see what it does in RC. Everyone has their opinions.

At the end of the day, make sure that whatever you get is water proof and tacky...most aren't, so be sure to double check before you buy.
