| Diff choices for 2.2s competition build
Going for a 2.2s competition build soon and trying to decide on the axels I want to use, thought maybe i'd throw it up here and see what others may say. Classic AX10: Pro's: - lots of hop ups readily available from vendors and rc aftermarket - easy to work on - already have a set - popular, trusted - Easy to do an xr steering/axle mod - Smaller track width leaves room to play with final width f&r Cons: - huge pumpkin - front diff centered - servo and up front electronics / batt are going to sit up high ~ - Servo horizontal - not the best clearance Axial AR60: dont really have any personal XP with these Pro's: - lots of aftermarket support from vendors and rc shops - pumpkin is offset - servo mount to the side - look a lot stronger/sleeker to me - diff seems smaller and more condensed than the ax10' - xr mod-able - Dravtech and Dlux have a great options for these atm Cons: - pretty wide, which some may argue is a good thing, but not much room for altering track width - dont know too much about them and have no experience Losi LCC/LNC; dont really have any personal XP with these Pro's: - great clearance - xr mod-able Cons: - Aftermarket support seems to have dried up - seem like they are high maintenance - lots of peek and tune to set up - xr mod support seems to have come and gone as well as chromoly gears.. Pluse it looked as though the mod reduced clearance to the housing - may need to run brushless to get full potential from the worm gears? SSD Diamond axles: Pro's: - 3rd member! - link locations look prime - solid cnc'd housing - good bearing sizes - when the front comes out may have same or usably similar mounts as the ar60 - diff is angled for rock deflection - off center pumpkin for front when its out - possible vertical mounting for servo Cons: - pumpkin although angled nice is still large - front diff is not yet available on the market - all metal housing = weight that has to be dealt with at the final weigh in What other axle options am I missing here? Maybe the cons arent as much "cons" as I think they are. Maybe there are pro's Im missing. Rc4wd has a lot of good looking diffs but feels like a gamble for aftermarket support and relying on them not being discontinued at anytime kinda sucks. If I could fab up parts myself Id just do what I wanted, but I cant. Anyone who has built these diffs up, would you do it again? Anything you love or hate about your experience? you never mentioned body, track, WB, or rig size. the difference in width would be the deal maker/breaker for me. the diff height from centerline on the SCX axles vs the wraith axles is identical. |

2.2 sportsman comp class 3 pound rig 12.5" WB ~10.5" TW I dont know what chassis yet, Ytown? Sudu? Boxer? Something else? Im not sold on any of these yet. Will be using shift or VP hubs. Probably brass knuckles. every time I look at that SSD rear diamond I get a little excited tho. Last edited by Morbid Angel; 05-26-2015 at 10:18 PM. |

If you are shooting for 3lb you can rule out the SSD axles straight away. Take your time to browse the 2.2S builds in the AX10 section. Take from each of them what you want to apply to your own rig and go from there. |

I went from an ax10 based rig to an ar60 based rig. I prefer the ar60 axles for a few reasons -offset pumpkin(set to be the same side as my berg) - servo location with dlux mounts is like a berg -easy to get into gears/locker/bearings -no real need for beef tubes, axles are already fairly strong. -not really a fan of the ax10 3 posts for mounting to the axle. |
