Default Gearing/motor turn changes

I'm going to toss this here since it crosses over between mechanical and electrical.

I have a fairly heavy rig at 11lbs, which I just made a tire change to.

Prior to and currently I have no heat issues with either the 35 t motor nor the ESC running 3S.

My gearing is 64/20 spur/pinion, 1.78:1 transmission, 1.47:1 transfer case and 43/13 front gears.

So if I am doing this right my final gear ratio is around 27.689:1.

I was running og rock beast, and when mounted to the rig was a touch faster then I really needed, but all in all worked as trail rig, G6 crawler. So with tires I was at about 4.082:1.

I switched up to the RBXL's which place me at 4.32.

Not a huge change but just enough for me to want to make a few changes to get a little better gear ration.

I am going to pick up a 11t and 14t pinion to land at 50:1or 39:1. Might pick up a few more to get it where it feels right.

That was a long way to get to the question.

Is it better to get to my desired wheel speed using gearing or motor turns?

I am considering moving to a 45t motor and dropping the pinion to see where the speed ends up.

I guess another way to ask it is do I want to fit the motor to the gearing or gearing to the motor.

Do the pinion gear. Work the motor until it gets hot.
