Default How To:Locking The Pede...NO Gooo

I have seen this on RCC somewhere already, but there are always people asking how to lock the Stampede tranny, so I thought I would add another search hit to the site, and also have some pretty good pics to really show it well.

There are ways of course to do it with a goo substance such as JB Weld, Plastisteel, hot glue, epoxies, etc...but this is how to do it without using any goo at all which leaves you with no mess if for some reason you do decide to go back to having a "differential" tranny.

For reference, when talking about the pede tranny, the main shaft assembly (the part that runs through the tranny to each drive shaft to the axles), is called the differential assembly. The large white gear on this main shaft is called simply the differential gear. The planetary gears are the four identical cylinder shaped gears that install inside the differential gear. The two sun gears are the gears in which the planetaries rotate around...hmmm go figure ...these gears are the one's that exit through the case to the drive shafts.

What makes the pede have a "differential" action...meaning you can hold one shaft and the other will still turn...is that the two sun gears are never BOTH in contact with all four of the planetary gears at the same time. Only two of the planetaries are in contact with each sun gear.

In this way of locking the tranny, you are simply putting all four of the planetaries in contact with the sun gears all the time. Now on to the pics and steps.....don't worry, it's very simple.

--First pic shows the planetary gears installed into the differential gear in it's stock configuration.

--Second pic shows one of the planetary gears removed (the one that sits lowest in the differential), and a 3mm nut put over the shaft and resting on the bottom.

--Third pic shows the planetary reinstalled on top of the 3mm nut spacer.

--Fourth pic shows the only modification you have to do...the "cap" of the differential gear housing has four "donut" shaped holes on it to locate the shafts of the planetary gears when you've screwed it down. The two "donuts" that are the tallest now need to be shaved down a bit (the same bit as the thickness of the spacer you installed).

That's it! You have to do the spacer steps to a total of TWO planetaries...the two opposite of each other. Now put the cap on the differential gear with the four screws and you have a locked Stampede tranny for your crawler. NOW GO CRAWLIN'

killer idea

just the amount of weight saved

also saves a lot of time to.. waiting hours for jb to dry

plus you dont have to buy more snot to lock the trans up

i wonder how many ounces this mod would knock off of the center mass rotation

If you need a quick fix I've heard of people putting foil in the diff.

Other then JB, I have seen quite a few other goo methods fail, but never this one. Axles, shafts, and pinoins, but this one alsways has held true for me.

Nice write up

I used a method similar to this.... It failed on me after a few months of use. I ended up doing a trail fix and used a super glue and sand mix to lock it. I didn't have any other way of fixing it at the park, and its held up ever since
