Wow, looks impressive! Do you think it will have enough gear reduction?

If it works well, you should look into selling it! I'd buy it!

Its been thought of, he posted this design before

IIRC its a 20:1? Or was it more Ace?

Oh; and how big is that Ace? There is nothing for scale.

The big worm wheel has about 71 teeth (hard to count)

So it's about 70:1. If anything that might be too much reduction.

I made the worm wheel by mashing a blank against a 1/4" tap spinning in the lathe. The blank was mounted where the lathe cutter normally goes and was free to pivot. When the blank hit the tap the tap gashed in the teeth and turned the blank around.

Pretty cool and very easy. (for the gear). The worm gear is just a piece of 1/4-20 bolt.

As far as selling I doubt it. Too much time to make!

I guess I was a bit off on the reduction! Great idea Ace.

That's awesome Ace!! Did you use a roll tap or cut tap to do it? Is the "spur" gear 1" diameter so the threads continuously meet up around the circumference?

how would you mount it to the clod? what all would you use for cable/ hook? think long and hard about selling them..... i want 3, but have no money right now.. wait 3 or 4 months and i shoulld have some cash. lets see pics of it on the truck and wut type of power dose it have? how long of a wire can you have to pull you up stuff with? im building a trailer and that would be sick as hell to have a winch to pull my trucks up on to it. and would be sick for mud bogging with my trucks.. but yea let us know how much im sure many people would buy some if you made some

Thanks guys.

Bender, I used a cutting tap, nice sharp spiral point. It's amazing how well the method works.

I heard about it on a website where a guy was making a worm gear for telescope positioning. Because he needed a very specific # of teeth( like 251 or something), he gashed starting teeth in his; indexing the gear blank in his lathe and using the tool post like a shaper to notch the teeth.

Since I didn't care if I had 68 teeth or 69 or 70 I just let it hob what it needed (no pre-cutting of teeth just round aluminum blank).

I know, I was skeptical at first but I've made about 6 wheels this way and they all turn out fine (no 1/2 teeth)

Here's a pic witha dime for scale:

Blazed, looks like I replied while you were.

I'd love to sell them. But it takes sooooooo much time. Maybe I'll make a limited productioin run.

Also the gears worry me. If they strip then I'd have to make replacements. Need to make a few and test the crap out of them first.

I do have the drawings for the parts. If I find I can't sell them I'll happily post the dwgs!

Sorry about your grandpa!

Yep, independent rear kills the 3rd channel.

This is going in my 2.2 front steer only.

Ace I like the winch I just have one concern. I would like to seea bracket to support the worm gear. If the winch gets in a bind the worm gear may deflect and cause it to strip the soft aluminum spur.
But then again I'm an artist not a machinist or enginer.

That was my thought as well, maybe make the pinion gear run through a bearing, and have it supported so it couldn't deflect.

Man I sure could use one of these for a new project I am building. Let me know if you plan to sell some.

I thought about adding a support bearing on the end of the motor but felt it wouldn't be worth the effort. The motor needs to be adjustable so the support would have to move with it.

I'm hoping at 70:1 the gear won't see much force. That's the hope anyways

That is some nice work. It looks too good to have been done by hand, what machinery do you use?

Blue,

I have a Taig CNC benchtop mill. Qute little thing weighs about 50lbs.
I used it to profile the 3 plate parts.

I bought it to make my Clod/TXT adapters (also to have a cnc mill of course)

For the lathe parts I have an old South Bend 9A.
