Default G-Made Portals for Scale Rig use.

Got a set of G-Made Portal axles from the R1 kit to see their potential for use on scale rigs. Here's my initial impression:

I was mainly concerned with how 1.9s would look on them. You can see the outer gearboxes are quite large and don't look quite right with 1.9s. I really think these belong on a 2.2 build with a deeper spaced wheel to hide some of the outer portion of the axle. The build construction seems solid enough but without testing I can't say much more. The attachment points for the 4-link and Shock mount brackets are just huge. If you were to grind them off you would still be left with a notch out of the main axle tube. Leafs, Captured, or 4-link, the location of the mounts makes it really easy to attach any kind of custom platform to accommodate the desired suspension setup. I don't have an exact measurement but of course the biggest advantage to using portals you can see is the extra pumpkin clearance. The Diff cover on the G-Mades are metal and a nice touch. The axle housing is a one piece design similar to 1:1.

-Width
Axial 9.25"
Gmade: 10"

If you're using 4.5" or taller 1.9s they're going to look alright but the large outer gearboxes just look too large in my opinion for anything smaller than 2.2. For a pair of new axles you can expect to pay a bit over $100. Slightly more than a set of AX-10s.

I dont really agree with the portal being to big axle tube sure. the portal is pretty close

Have you tried to clear 1.9's on the front yet? that is where I am finding my issue the wheel tire rub on knuckle because of the dropped offset..

I would say width is pretty close for some bodies to. I have a set bolted up to a scx10 right now I am going 2.2 on it but they look pretty good on it..

At least from the looks, the Gmade don't look any bigger than the Axials!

The TSS trail ready beadlocks clear ok. RC4WD Stamped Steel 1.9 clear fine too.

The width is the only real issue for me.

Those would be nice on a unimog.... You would just have to find the right body...

How do you think the Gmade portals would be on a Wreckluse?

Very tempting...

Those g-mades would be killer for the willys crowd. HHMMmMM. Width and Scale realism without the ground clearance of the huge wheely king diff.
