Default who says PL TSL's won't work on RC4WD Steelies?

I picked up a set of RC4WD Steel 1.9's finally after wanting them since they came out and i also grabbed a set of the new Proline TSL SX's just because i had to. I knew it said on RC4WD's sight that there wheels don't work with Proine but i saw people putting flatirons on them using PVC inserts and figured it would be no big deal, But after doing some research i kept reading people saying that the TSL's just flat out don't work with the Steelies even with the insert mod.

Well of course i had to try so i cut a piece of PVC a little smaller than the original insert and sure enough i couldn't get the tire to seat for the life of me. Not to be deterred i started looking at the tire closely and noticed the inside of the bead was beveled. Well i needed to see how Proline does it so i took apart one of my buddies wheels so see how the locking mechanism worked. Just as i thought, there was a bevel on the inside of the locking ring and it suddenly hit me how easy the answer was.

All i needed to do was machine a bevel on the inside of the piece of PVC so the tire bead could sit properly.

Here is the tire all fitted up

and here it is mounted on my old comp truck turned scale truck

I was so happy i got it to work! they just look amazing! Next is paint and i'm going to look into SCH 80 Steel pipe locking rings instead of the PVC to add weight.

Beautiful!

I'm tucking this info away in the crevices of my brain for future reference.. I love the look of those tires, and those wheels, and when you put the two together..

My 'Lux will love them after this winters rebuild!

I also had to have this combo. I done the pvc trick and mounted mine up fine too. also used the trick to mount scale 4x4 mudslinger tires.

Kick Ass!, you'll like the tires if you haven't run them yet. I'm running some on my XJ and love them. Just need to tell Proline to stop shipping them with the memory foams. I don't know anyone who runs them on a scaler, due to the weight of most scalers.

ive been running this setup since the TSL came out. i didnt bevel the ring, i just did it normally and it work. it took a little massaging (and the help of 1BJB)...but we got it done.

I just got a set of oem and pl tsl. Had to have em they look so awesome. But I was curious. Does the pvc still get cut to 3/4"? And what did you use to bevel the edge? Dremel or something like that

from the looks of his bevel, I'd venture to guess he used a lathe

Yep, that is correct. You probably could do it with a dremel, you just need to take your time.

Hey, nice job on the rings. The set that I made for mine are .750" wide. How wide did you make yours?

Thought I would throw up a pic of the Tsl bead shape for your description. I've never been too shy about cutting up tires to make custom ones.

Well I am going to bring a old thread back up.

What size of PVC pipe do you use?

Also will this work with the 5 lug rims?

I actually ended up using 2" schedule 80 pipe which has an inside dia of 1.94" and an outside dia of 2.38". it makes for the heaviest insert i could make and didn't require additional weight. Believe it or not i'm still using these wheels and tires and they are holding fine
