Default IS 8x8 HEMTT

Been pondering an 8x8 build. I really think I will be going the direction of an Oshkosh HEMTT 8x8 cargo version. I have found the the newer versions use independent suspension and have been contemplating the same.

So the question is, has anyone built a scale IS 8x8 or multi axle rig and if so what did they use and is there a thread on it?

I was thinking of using e-maxx parts but also thought about the stampede 4x4 parts using the front end pieces specifically.

I have seen all manner of multi axle rigs using maxx parts but nothing built to be more scale.

Yee ha! Another Texas based multi-axle rig! I've only seen one independently suspended multi-axle truck and it was all custom machined by the builder. It was a phenomenal build, though. I suspect a setup from a Traxxas truck may work, but the width will surely be an issue. Maybe two 1/16 Slash 4WDs could donate the drivetrain? Personally, I'm just planning on using TLT's and leaf springs.

Well, I want it wide enough to hold my 1.9 rigs on it. I will also set up something so I could tow one behind it. The HEMTT is my main inspiration but I am not going for an exact copy. The main thing I am toying with right now is the pass through differentials. I have debated using two transfer cases between the two front and two rear axles to avoid this, but that would force me to have the transmission up higher than I want. It also adds quite a bit more expense. I think if I epoxy two cut case halves together like others have done it will work well.

Sense I am not looking for crazy maxx type suspension travel I will only use one shock per wheel and would like something short and beefy like the revo shocks. I was watching some video of the HEMTT's and the Tatra 8x8's IS trucks and none of them have what I would call extreme suspension travel.

I just wanted to pop this back up to see about more input.

I am really liking the idea of an IS multi axled rig. I think with the Revo shocks I can get ride height where I want, the shocks will look about the right size, and with me making the rig very heavy the revo springs will hold it well.

It would be nice to have a multi axle section setup for all these builds.

Here is my old build thread. Eddie and Clay are reworking it.

Shane's 6x6 Trials Truck Build

The 6x6 chassis could easily be modified to accept another rear axle. You'd need a few more axle cases to do the rear pass-through.

I get to see these every day (I work there ) and love the idea. Unfortunately, they won't let me take one out and put it to the test.

Are you talking about Cole on the boards and that's his screen name?

My plans with this thing are to go big.

A little bit on how this started:

My son who is now 5 has a huge Tonka firetruck. This one has to be special ordered online as most stores don't carry it. It comes out at around 30 inches long and about as wide as an MRC.

We had talked about turning it into an RC but I decided against it. First, I didn't want to hack it up as he still plays with it inside. Second, it really wasn't the best platform to convert in the first place and he wanted a more rescue style truck. He also likes the HEMTT's and saw some about two months ago out on I-10 in Houston.

We want this truck to be able to carry an SCX or the like on it's rear bed. while I plan on it being very much like an HEMTT we are not going for an exact replica and I want to put some of my son's ideas into it.

I also plan on using a lot of metal so it will be heavy. Seeing as it will be using a CC 1717 motor on 4-6s I don't see weight being an issue especially since 15-20 mph will be the top speed we are shooting for.

We also see this rig towing our other rigs to and from the drive sites when we are out.

So far my plans for the chassis are to take some 1/2" square tubing and slice in in half. The cross members will then be welded in between them.

With the way the maxx bulkheads work I plan on cutting off the support pieces for the shock towers and mounting the chassis rails directly to the tops of the bulkheads.

What I really need is to get some bulkheads and start experimenting.

Right now I plan on front steer only.

I really need to get my FJ build done first though. It's been at different levels of non-completion for over a year now.

That's awesome. Do they allow you to take pictures at all?
