| Alumilite casting resin
I found a winch on the Jeep scaler I got from emaxxjeremy. Liked the fake winch that was on it, decided to try making a new one. Poured the mold last night and started casting some new winches today. So far I've made five winches and can't wait to find time to mold other items for the scalers like seats, headlight buckets, steering wheels and such. No more searching for cell phone seats! The original on the left and a duplicate on the right. These are NOT for sale. Panasonic on the forums makes/sells them. I just made a few for myself. |

I did some reading on that stuff. Sounds easy but to do it well sounds more like art. I think the name is actually Alumilite too. http://www.alumilite.com/ *edit* some good how-to's on there. Josh Last edited by Harley; 07-03-2007 at 05:42 PM. |

now that looks cool. some other stuff i saw was resin casting but it wasnt a two part mold so one side of the moldee had to have a flat surface. nice find JIA! how many times do you think the mold will be usable? |

Thor, I've made five parts and it's still fine. We used to use the stuff years ago at the hobby shop, several of the 40K guys would cast their own creations for use in the game. Never heard the guys complain about ruining molds. | |

cool, ive been thinking about molding a couple of the things i made on jackrabbit to maybe turn a few bucks. but if i have to make new molds frequently it would be more of a PITA than anything.

JIA, a few questions and suggestions. What is your mold made from? Is it the 2 part RTV silicone stuff? If so, you do not want to use a mold release agent. (looks like you've been using a mold release) Mold release agents begin to build up over time and distort the mold, they also degenerate the mold compound and lessen the shelf life of the mold. I've got RTV molds that are about 5-6 years old that work just like they did the first time. Release agents also get into your finished product and cause extra work for you, cleaning sanding, that isn't necessary. If you aren't using an RTV silicone formula i suggest that you switch. Yeah, the mold is 2 part silicone. I'm using the stuff that was included with the Alumilite kit. Not using a mold release, just plucking parts from the mold after they cure. Made another mold last night. The original piece that I used was made from a two piece mold, I managed to replicate the part with a one piece mold. It's a shift knob for the 2.2 Sally build. Never mind the dirt from my hands that got on it. Last edited by JasonInAugusta; 07-12-2007 at 12:45 PM. |
