| Cheap fix for weak axles
I can't tell you how many Wheely Queen axle shafts I've snapped on my scaler; I lost count at 12. So this time, rather than fork out another fifteen bucks for a pair of shafts that are just going to snap again, I thought I'd try a field repair. Found a cut-off flare end from my last tuber project, ground it down to 1/4 inch long and used it as a sleeve, brazing the whole mess together. Tossed the whole mess into a bucket of water while it was still hot to keep its heat-treatment. Had to grind a bit to fit in the drive cup, but no major hassles. This only works on the rear (non-steering) axle, up front the thicker shaft wouldn't let it steer. Fortunately I seem to break more rears anyway. Yeah, I'm cheap. |
