Default Budget Wheely King Monster Truck Build

I have wanted to build a WK axled monster truck for awhile now. I have finally gathered enough parts to get it started. Like all my RC projects I am being a cheapass so I will include the prices of where I am at with all the parts I have so far. Almost everything was found in the for sale section on here.

WK Axles - 50$
Axial tranny - 25$
tires/wheels - 30$
HPI Savage shocks - 10$
vxl speedo - 55$
aluminum skidplate - 5$ (just paid shipping)
aluminum c channel for custom chassis - 7$

so far - 182$

Not bad considering all I need to finish is a motor and body. I have a line on a body but I'm not saying what yet because I have the high bid at a whopping 6$, it needs some work but will fit the build perfect. I might end up splurging on a couple parts for the axles and tranny, like aluminum rear straight axles and a 5mm output for the tranny to run MAXX shafts This hobby is hard on a budget!

If anyone has any advice on building a WK based monster I am all ears!

It's good to be cheap sometimes. I'm definitely more of a "upgrade when it breaks kind of guy". Why spend 200$ upgrading your axles before you even run the truck?

Anyways I'm kind of stuck on this build. Trying to find a clod buster body but I keep losing eBay auctions for them. 40$ for a beat to shit body with a giant hole in the hood is just too much.

Yeah I posted this one on rcmt as well. I have used that forum to do some research for this build. Never built a monster truck before but have always wanted too

I was using the traxxas velinum system but the stock gears don't like it some Im putting a 27t in it for now. Its all torn apart for the rebuild right now. The bushless is a blast in it and i will go back to it once i beef it up some.

I was thinking of running the vxl with a sensored motor. These are what I'm looking at:

Turnigy TrackStar 13.5T Sensored Brushless Motor 3040KV

Turnigy TrackStar 17.5T Sensored Brushless Motor 2270KV

Not sure what would work best yet. I will also be beefing up my axles

Also a guy on rcmt.net showed my these:

TowerHobbies.com | HPI82047 82047 HPI Racing Bevel Gear 38T/13T E-Savage

He said the pinion gear is a bit of a pain to get the e clip on but otherwise they hold up great and cost much less than the WK HD gears.

I have a set of HPI savage shocks that I got for super cheap. They might be a little overkill

I had a set of esavage shocks on mine. They were way too long for high speed runs. They don't leak near as much as the wk shocks so that is one plus. You can just limit them with some tubing on the shaft on the inside to reduce the overall travel and length.

I ran 90mm shocks on mine and it made a world of difference in handling.

Yeah, I am running 90mm shocks now also. Its a good balance of handling with plenty of articulation.

Damn 90mm is pretty short. Might have to rethink my shocks for this one. The whole "budget" concept is going out the window pretty quick, I just paid damn near $100 for a clod body set.

Yeah they are, but I really wanted a clod body for this build. I let two go on eBay that were in rough shape, got pissed, and bought the next one I could find Hopefully get it be Friday or Saturday so I can have an update this weekend

I like where this project is going, and good use of available "budget" parts . Makes me miss my old 8.5 brushless WK basher. RCMT did a little feature article on it when I added the wheelbase extensions from Integy, much more stable. Keep going!
