Default Torsion WK Comp Crawler

Here are some pics of my WK crawler project. It's still a work in progress, and I'm working the bugs out, but it did show it's some potential in it's first outing last weekend.

Chassis design is based on the BMV-ii, with the motor relocated to the front axle using a GD 600. The chassis plates are cutting board. The drive lines are a custom built using Maxx 2.5 shafts and yokes on the axle ends, and Jato yokes on the tranny. I plan to dump the Stampede tranny in favor of a Losi, which will be way more compact.

That looks really good. I like how the motor connects to the transmission with a driveshaft.

Looks great man.

Working on the same thing, but I want to use a plate on the axle instead of the clamps to increase the clearance (like a BTA plate).

How much fab time do you have into it?

Build took about 4 days, not sure on the total hours, but I work pretty slow.

Nice , looks promising, one question though, how come you have the steering link on the bottom? i ask because i see most comp rigs try to put it on the upper end. Can it be done? my wk is completely stock still, so i haven't even look into modding it, i have so many unfinished projects still.

I tried to put it on top, but ran into clearance issues. Because of the clocking of the axles, it has less clearance on the diff housing, and it hits the axle tube clamps as well. I will still got it to the top, but need to do some more work to make it happen.

Right now it's just over 11.5" on Axial beadlocks.

I need to change the music wire from .12" to .15", which should hopefully make it feel less "springy", as it seems to be ok on the rocks, then just roll over, without a lot of warning. I guess that's the nature of a torsion design, but I think it can be better. and I need to adjust driving style from my old SW2 truck.

I'm also needing to find a way to add more reduction. Right now it's just not low enough. As a bandaid I will switch to a 65 turn and drop to a 10 tooth pinion, but I think I will still need to go lower.

Thanks for the comments guys!

If I had the money right now, I would have something very similar to this!

looks good man... i just built one almost identical to the one you have using my wheelie king parts.. it ran very well over the rocks.. but i always like to come up with different things.. so i am on like my 8th wheelie king prototype chassis... back to the link setup.. haha... i just like to wrench on stuff... if you are looking for a motor let me know cuz over here at teambrood we just started on our first line of rock crawler motors and batteries.. any wind that you want... we can make it... visit www.teambrood.com

Funy you should bring that up. I guess this must actaully be forward cow girl, or maybe traditional. The original Reverse Cow Girl truck that Adam (DUIdirk) built had the motor on top of the rear axle. First time he brought that truck out we were all blown away by how well it worked.

Jeff J - were you one of the guys who came to the comp at Mukeltio? I know you guys are working on crawler gear, I can't wait to see some of the idea's that have been talked about.

Just a quick update on my torsion WK crawler:

I've been running some bigger rubber on this thing, and the WK axles are holding up just fine so far. My first set of Frankenstein tires was narrowed Maxx Mashers with a 2.2 sidewall glued in, which worked ok. Now I'm running Panther Gator truggy tires, modded to fit the 2.2 rim. They stick to the rocks like glue, but I'm going to try narrowing them. The truck is too wide (almost 12"), and the tires are so sticky, any time the top of the sidewall hits a rock, it basically stops my forward progress.

I've also dumped the Stampede tranny, which didn't have enough reduction with the GD600 acting as my spur gear. Running a 12 tooth pinion I was only getting a final drive ratio of just under 30:1. I've now switched to a XXX-NT tranny, which gives me a final drive ratio of 45:1 with a 12 tooth, and I picked up a 10 tooth, which would bring it down to 54:1 if I install it.

Here's what it looks like now

I was looking at the Panther tires.

The width was the only thing holding me back, cant wait to see them narrowed!

And love the rig!
