| Portable trails
This is something I have be contemplating a lot for a few months, some way to make a set of portable obstacles for setting up at events. there are several events around the area through out the year we could set up, have comps and get some interest in the hobby. the obstacles would have to be rugged, light weight and easy to store. I was thinking molded fiberglass, 4 different shapes and then multiples of each shape. But then cost becomes a concern. Something stack-able is ideal, any ideas? a guy could also make various bridges to connect everything too.

Fishmaxx or ROCKEDUP RICKY (I can't remeber) did something similar for the 2010 Midwest Indoor Comp I think... maybe talk to one of them? I remember reading in a magazine back around the start of crawlers going mainstream that there was this club/groub that had a course set-up on a trailer and traveled around to different events and whatnot. They had a ton of interest and it seemed pretty legit |

That is kind of what I am leaning towards, a trailer. A small one, say 6X6, open air with a tall hollow structure with an access door. this could act as the central structure and then inside you could store all you small obstacles, bridges, ladders and what not. main structure could be like 1/4 rod covered with chicken wires and fiberglass. the rest could be a combo of real rocks and hand made items. one problem, I bet I would have over 1K in the damn thing by the time it was done....or more. And then again, maybe not, but it would not be cheap. maybe it would be easier just to haul some dirt in LOL.

A trailer would be ideal... but the cost would be a bit rediculous |

| Re: Portable trails Trailer for 2 Jet Ski PWC needs bunkss This would be a good start. If you want to roll with an idea like that I have a shop in Solomon. Welders, torch, most metal working supplies. I'd donate some space, time and tools for the project. |

It was some Kansas 4x4 forum. I can't remember the correct name, but it only dealt with 1:1's...

Styrofoam is a great building material for rocks. With some industrial paint on type coatings it can become pretty tough also. I don't know the name of the coating I have in mind but its available at the hardware store. Your rock structure can be cut into 4x4 sections for transport. I am sure there are plenty of examples on rcc.

yeah i was looking at the polystyrene insulation sheets at Menard's the other day. A guy could glue it together in layers and then sculpt it. then cover it is a resin or even that paint. then I could store it in my pickup bed trailer. | |

I used to use it lots in theatrical scenery construction. Its easy to work with and it only takes a saw/file/knife to do some really nice looking terrain. It does suck up water based paint so coating it is very necessary as a prep for painting as well as structural fortitude.

I almost forgot about expanding foam. That can be used to fill in gaps and form ridges of all sorts.

Back in '06, rcptracks (RCP Tracks) built a course out of coated styrofoam for the RC Expo. I believe they also did one for the same show in '09. Search here for RCX footage, or check out the link above for ideas.

| Re: Portable trails I have a shit ton of rocks, branches, and stuff I could possibly donate to this if need be. I moved this crap 3 times and have yet to do anything with it. I was SUPPOSED to be making a rock garden in my back yard. Yeah, that's happened. |
