| Kyosho Rock Force - Project Black Orange (modified)
Hi all... After an Axial Comp Rig I modified a RF. This rig have really strong components but to modify I need more than patience. Carbo Chassis Plates from Xtreme Racing Axial 2.2" Rockster with Proline 2Stage Mem Foam and HPI Grabber adhesive weights/rim: front 6 oz. - rear 2,8 oz. modified skid plate bolted on chassis I prefer the Novak Goat Crawler Combo but I tested now the LRP crawler esc with LRP crawler 21.5 T sensored brushless motor. I think the Novak Combo is better, also the esc is waterresistant and the motor have a nice aluminum housing. I love the Traxxas Connectors - easy to solder and really good quality. The next problem: pinion/spur overall reduction I want the same wheelspeed, power and torque as my Axial - *LOL* First I tested a 71 T spur with 40 T pinion - stock worms (1:30) and overall i= 1:53 (remember the Axial have the same). Absolutely a no go - less running time, motor overheat, esc temp shut down a no go combination New calculations showed the following under implementation: 82 T spur, 23 T pinion, stock worms (I don' t buy the high speed ones for 80,- €/pair ) Result: no shut down, no overheat, much more running time using a 7,2 V 1.600 mAh NiMH 2/3 A batt., but enough power and torque. Less wheelspeed - but I think under this setting it' s self-explanatory. Another thing is the heavy () steering angle. i modified the front axle completely using self made inner adapters, Inferno MP 7 knuckles and MP 9 CVDs. Brazed (hard-soldered ???) and fixed with screws and loctite. modified front axle (modified right - stock left) steering angle more than 50° - that' s ok. Rear straight axle adapters (self made from stock material) Hand made Servo holder from alu Servo holder for rear and front axle - rear with dig. The rear dig have those functions: 1. 4 WD 2. FWD with rear axle locked 3. FWD with rear axle disconnected I love this dig but it doesn' t work correctly. If you choose lock or disconnect you' ve to go a little backward so the 4 WD starts. That' s it - finished after four weeks of building and testing... Are you going to put a buggy universal on the short side as well? I'm waiting on mine right now,hopefully soon I can get it together.

Hi, the pic show the comparsion only. The front axle have two modified CVDs. Because of the stock heat-treated material it' s not possible to drill a hole, saw or hone without special equipment. Therefore I' ve taken round steel, drill a 6 mm diameter hole in one side (for the worm gear shaft) and a 3,2 mm diameter for the Inferno MP 9 CVD. The CVD is also heat-treated but you can work on with a Proxxon or Dremel for cutting and grinding. Both inner adapter have different lenght, the modified CVDs, too. Drill another hole with a 4 mm diameter in the steel adapter, screwed and fixed with loctite (heat resist). Now it' s time for burning... Using a hand-burner with more than 700° for hard-soldering. Grease and polish the universal-joint and make sure it' s slightly moveable. Also you should hone the knuckles for more steering angle but not too much (caution: knuckles break down). Also make sure the modified CVDs and the worm gear shaft (flat end) make one linie otherwise you hear the CVDs knocking. The "virtual line" (worm gear shaft flat end / universal joint adapterside) must be ABSOLUTELY horizontal on both side ! ! ! If you work correctly you' ve a very good steering angle, in combination with the rear axle locked the turning radius is fantastic. Regards, Juergen |

gotta love the steering angle you got from that mod to the front knuckles. im still trying to figure out the rear link mod though. rig looks great. |

Hi, I get the 82 T spur from www.kyosho.de (online shop). Look @ your LHS - you can choose any spur with 48dp. Or visit your favorite online shop, many spur gears are compatible e.g. from 2WD buggys. regards, Juergen |

Hi Carl, thanks a lot for your praise. I don' t test it on the rocks because I sold the RF to a friend in the german rock crawler forum. The money' s for my next project, an Unimog U 1200 Rock Buggy. I love that rig. I wanna build a semi-scale rig with very good crawling properties. Therefore I buy a Losi Comp Crawler and use the axles, transmission and links. The Unimog typical ladder frame I will partially even produce. And this is my model... Unimog U 1200 Rock Buggy I will make an extra thread... stay tuned regards, Juergen |
