RedCat Sumo RSMC Q&A/ Build Thread Here is my RedCat Sumo RSMC build thread. Plans for this thread are to make it the definitive RSMC Q&A/ mild build thread. I got into RC crawlers when a friend traded my an AX10 for my old Cherokee bumper I couldn't get rid off. I figured it was more liquid than a huge bumper in my shed... ya I never sold it... just played around with it on trails when it got slow or at lunch, I always wanted something smaller so I can goof around with it at the campfire. My wife bought me a Redcat sumo for Christmas. Anyways here is the "real rig". http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...581027_n-1.jpg Here is the Red Cat Sumo Crawler after I pulled all the goofy stickers off it http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...DSC_1009-1.jpg http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...DSC_1007-1.jpg |
Re: RedCat Sumo RSMC Q&A/ Build Thread Here are some stock shots (for those of you who haven't seen these things) http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...j/DSC_1006.jpg http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...j/DSC_1004.jpg http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...j/DSC_1002.jpg http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...j/DSC_1001.jpg http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...j/DSC_0999.jpg |
Re: RedCat Sumo RSMC Q&A/ Build Thread So what's the build plan? Battery conversion? Bigger tires? What? |
Re: RedCat Sumo RSMC Q&A/ Build Thread Here's a quick Youtube video I made to show the steering modes <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/g6XSgm02-3A" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> (hopefully the embed works) if not: maybe the mods can fix it. Re: RedCat Sumo RSMC Q&A/ Build Thread First thing I noticed is the springs are way too stiff.... maybe it's different with this little stuff, but un-captured springs lead to unbalanced rigs in full size so I pulled the coils off and measured the length of the shock and cut the coils to that length (2 loops for now). http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...DSC_1011-1.jpg Here is the difference in ride height (cut on the PS side) http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...j/DSC_1014.jpg Uncut vs cut flex is much improved (here's total flex) http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...j/DSC_1015.jpg Here's the point where it lifts a tire http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...j/DSC_1016.jpg Seems pretty balanced now. But I did order the RedCat Softer coils to see if that helps also. (cutting coils should theoretically raise the spring rate). I'll play with that when the new ones come in. |
Re: RedCat Sumo RSMC Q&A/ Build Thread I'm pretty new to RC stuff so.. Quote:
I saw this thread: Redcat Sumo micro crawler (RSMC) parts breakdown and losi compatibility and this one: http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/micro...sumo-help.html but I'm not exactly clear: I have a Micro Brain charger and an Onyx 200 charger, so I'm not really wanting to go LiPo unless there is a way to use my current charger. Can someone point me to what battery and where to buy it? What voltage do I need? (I'm guessing 6v since 4 x 1.5v "AAA" batteries equals 6v. ) Can I run it on more voltage and how many cells? What mAh do I want to buy? |
Re: RedCat Sumo RSMC Q&A/ Build Thread One of the obvious weaknesses on the RCSC is that the steering linkage sticks out so far it gets hung up easily. I guess you could mod it like this thread shows: http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/losi-...dcat-sumo.html but I think larger tires are a must also. What tires should I get? |
Re: RedCat Sumo RSMC Q&A/ Build Thread I flipped my tie rods (with aftermarket servos) and the clearance issues went poof. Check out the sticky thread "post your battery finds here". I run 7.4 no problems. |
Re: RedCat Sumo RSMC Q&A/ Build Thread So 7.4v how many cells if I use a nimh and how many cells? |
Re: RedCat Sumo RSMC Q&A/ Build Thread Going to hijack your thread for a post  but I've been looking into the sumo axles but can't seem to find just them. Anyone know where to? Or is buying the whole thing best? Plan on making a foff for my little girl she wants a fast truck like mine so figured id build one and surprise her |
Re: RedCat Sumo RSMC Q&A/ Build Thread may aswell buy a complete. i just bought one off ebay a few days ago for $90 shipped |

but i was wondering how many part match w the trekker? as in ball cups, tranny/axle in/output, driveshafts, etc. im researching how to swap out losi worm axles for these to give my scaler some speed edit oops nevemind found other thread w info |

Re: RedCat Sumo RSMC Q&A/ Build Thread if you relocate the shocks down to the lowest hole it will improve flex and clearance a little |
