Default well i guess its time i build a 1.9 comp tuber

Instead of stealing my 3 year old son Hayden's, i decided to get my own.

I traded some stuff i had laying around for this to use as a donor vehicle.

I have been collecting parts over the past week, still waiting for some goodies to come in, but i decided to start the chassis since i found myself home alone with both kids sleeping

first of course is the scale drawings of the chassis:

Then i tore apart the L-trail and robbed it for the parts i was going to need, along with a few sticks of 1/8" solid rod

Then it was bending and brazing time!

should look kinda familiar :hmmm:

keep checking back for updates i will post up the goodies as they arrive!

That is a cool chassis. The design of it is great. I like the slight lean to one side. People will def. notice this one.

Thanks. i have always liked the slant top tubers, coming from 1:1 comps i like mine to try to resemble a real rig. It is pretty close design to my 2.2 chassis i built last year.

time for an update, got some more free time tonight as the wife had some work to do and the kids where sleeping, so on to the pics

started working on the lower portion of the chassis and wanted to use the stock skid so i traced out the stock frame rail where the skid attached ont a piece of 1/8 flat stock.

after drilling out the mount holes, cutting them out, and cleaning them up, i brazed them to some tube that would attach the mounts to the main chassis

next was to figure out shock mounts, i wanted to keep them in close to the stock location but forward just a tad, also wanted to keep them the same distance apart from stock. I cut some 3/16 brake line for the rears and brazed them into place

fronts would be a little more difficult, again i wanted to lay them down a tad and keep them at stock width so i used the stock spreader bar brazed a couple tubes to it and attached in the front section of the chassis between the nose and cab cross member, shocks will mount inboard the frame rails.

last was the upper link mounts. I couldn't decide what to do, but searching through my junk box I found some chainsaw chain links i had from when i built my scaler. I cut them in half and brazed em on. They may be a tad too big but i think they will work out nicely, i had to press fit some brass spacers into the holes to get the correct diameter hole so the links wouldn't wobble.

all brazed up and ready for sand blaster and paint booth!

ok, got her all sand blasted, painted, and put together for mock up to make sure everything is ok before proceeding.

rear shocks will be inboarded when my rcbros 4 link plates arrive and i get rid of the stock upper links.

next to a stock mrc with no body shell on, only about 3/4" higher, and about 1/8" more ground clearance as it sits now:

mandatory flex shot:

So know i just need to wait for my wheels, tires, shocks, and 4 link plates to come in, make some new upper links, body panels, and wire it up!

cant wait to run it!!

thanks, i would love to get out there sometime and run with you guys! I don't know about schooling you all, but I'd give it my best shot! lol

Time for an update

Well, she is pretty much done, except for battery and battery mount on front upper links.

I got the 1.9 panthers all mounted up.

I put the esc on the rear links, and the receiver on the bottom of the roof panel.

The four link mounted up nicely even with the full size servo installed.

Now I just need to go find the right size battery and im off to play around.

Wow, great job. I wish I could braze that well.
how much ground clearance do you have.
Are you planning on bringing it down any?

thanks, you just have to practice, and remember, you can never use too much flux.

it has about an 1/8" more than stock, i do not plan on lowering it, i do not like belly dragging rigs. they don't ever work well for me with my driving style.

well, i took it out today to play a bit on the rocks. I used the stock battery on the rear 4 link plate just to test everything out.

Unfortinitly i found a problem, not sure what it is yet.

it seems like something is too tight or hung up in the axle or tranny, or possibly a bad motor. There is very little wheel speed and power compared to my other stock rig, especially in reverse, it almost wont even move. its also harder to turn drive train by hand than my other rig. Axles turned freely before i connected them to the tranny so i don't think its in the axles, but i cant be sure.

Any ideas on where to start? The motor got pretty hot after about 5 min of running, and it smelled real bad, but it seemed like it was really struggling to turn the drivetrain. Could it be that the slipper is too tight on the spur gear?

It could be that the slipper is to tight. But i have my all the way tight, and its all free spinning. I would start in the tranny were you said the axles turned freely before mounted up to it.

ok, well i figured out what was the problem, it seems to me that the owner of the rig previously must have had bad luck with the cross shaft pins for the drive nuts. he must have drilled out the shafts to put bigger pins in. I noticed that the axles did not turn freely with the tires mounted, but did with them off. with further inspection, was nice having a stock brand new one next to it, i found larger pins and different drive hexes on the axles. when the wheels were bolted on the hex was pushing against the axle housing and the pin was also hitting the bearing. so i guess i need 4 new outer shafts and 4 new drive hexes. I guess ic could be worse! just loosened the wheels for now and she runs great!

I also got my batteries from max amps, 15 bucks each 800mah 20c constant 35 burst 2s lipos. man are theses things tiney!! they fit beautifully between the front shocks and on top the upper links! supposedly they get over 1 hr run time with a hh mini torque master and full size servo. we shall see!

Here are some pics of the battery next to the stock servo just for size reference, and then installed on the rig

got to play with it today for about 20 min with it running right and new battery, and all i can say is :confused0068: this thing crawls fantastic! It made some lines that i couldn't believe.

cant wait to get some better shocks!
