Default battery question

hey guys, i have a MRC built up, and ive gotten to a bit of a issue. I ran stock motor, with a tekin fxr esc, and 3 cell on stock gearing and roasted a motor in 5 mins. i ran a losi slider motor on 3 on fxr with 3 cell lipo and it lasted 5 mins on stock gearing. Now i have just switched down to a i believe a 11 or 12 tooth pinion and currently just running a 2 cell lipo on the fxr, do you think that i can run the 3 cell without frying the motor again with this gearing, or is it just the nature of the little motors to not handle the power?
