Default pinion shim

I stripped out a metal pinion in my rear axle. I replaced the gear and started reassembly. I noticed with the axle clam shelled back together that the pinion shaft has some movement in and out. I looked at the front and it was worse. Has anyone added shims to try and tighten this up? I think it may be why my rear pinion failed.
