Default Knuckle weight mod

I have been wanting to do this every since nationals.
I saw how the supers had been weighted down low under the knuckles
and had to figure out a way to do it on my mrc.

Now this was my 1st attempt, and I did mess up on my drilling.
That has made the weights a little off and it looks horrible.

But I will get it right next time.

I first found a thin washer, drill out the center to fit the center of the kuckle.
Then cut it in 1/2 and dremmeled the edges to fit around the arm of the knuckle.

Then I drilled and tapped the knuckle for 3mm,and drilled/counter sunk the washer for the bolt.

I then drilled and tapped the washer 2x for 3mm

This is what the weight will mount to.

You can see here the way the top is shaped to clear the arm of the knuckle

Here you can see where I drilled and tapped the knuckle so I can mount the plate
I did end up needing to take a very small amount of material from around the bearing area.
This was so the plate would set flush,I didnt want to remove anymore material from the plate.

Now the plate is mounted,I had to dremmel the bolt head down just a touch in an effoert for a smooth
surface for the weights to mount. You can see the 2 holes that are drilled and taped for the weights.

Now I take a thick washer and cut it in 1/2
then drill it for the mounting plate
(this is where I screwed up,as a result they look rough when mounted)
Then I mount them to the plate and mount the wheel.

here you can see the weight dont line up,but the clearnce is there for the hex.
I just need to be more patient next time.

Here you can see them mounted, there is I think enough for one more 1/2 washer on this setup

I'm not to worried about them getting hung up,they look good to me.

The washer 1/2's are 15-16 grams each,a 1.9 vp slug is 15g each.
The totall set up here with 2 weights is 37 grams.

This may seem trivial, but the weight I mount here is very benificial.
It means that much weight can be removed from the rotational mass
That weight that is below the axle will be greater, that should help on steep climbs.

This was easy and any of you can do the same at home.

The tools was

dremmel
cordless drill
some drill bits and a tap

I will get this looking better my next time around.
You will need the wideners to use this set up like it is.
However you can run the weights on the inside of the plate with some thought and creativity.

Good luck,
Paul

No problem,I was out about $2 for the washers

I will play with this idea more in the future.

I would like to be able to get about 75 grams mounted on each side.

Looks good to me! I am going to give this a shot. Great average joe mod. Do you think lead melted down and poured to that similar shape would be heavier?

I have no idea,I was planing on heading to the scrap yard for some material.
I havnt got the opportunity lately, its a great place to get some cheap metals for hacking into.

Yes the junkyard is fun. I pour my own fishing weights so I was just thinking of trying that with your concept.

Looks like an idea with potential Quick question; what wheels are you running, how wide? I tried hard to get my track width under 8" with the Junfac red wideners but gave up with the Losi alum wheels. Thanks

This is the way I look at it
If you have an idea, you should at the very least give it a try.

Same goes for on course,if you see a line, but your buddies are showing you
"the line" try your line first, trust your instincts,if it doesnt work, then try your
buddies line.

Good job

Dunno why no one has bought out a kit yet, certainly a lot better than wheel weights if you can get enough weight there.

here ya go,
take your widener and cut them with the dremmel, then just cut a groove for the pin in the bottom and you have a custom hex.
This one is 10mm

Well if you have a dremmel there is no need to buy a kit

I'm thinking a little larger diam washer for the outer( maybe 1/2" wider than current) then a little smaller (maybe 1/4" wider than current)then this size and then one about 1/4 inch smaller than current.

So they will be kinda pyramid looking, and I think I can get my 70-80 grams.

According to USRCCA rules, 8" is the max allowable track width.
