| Building a Slick 60 , 61 to 66 Ford F-series body
Well I haven't been posting much , my fellow crawler buddy is out of town, and the parks people ruined our prime trail area ... I have however been SLOWLY building what I consider a CARTOON scale Slick 60 truck body for my Losi Mini Crawler. I like the stockish chassis enough not to change the wheel base, and I have a couple other bodies for the truck ...so I am building this body to set over the wheels, without dragging on them. So I ended up with a overly short wheel base. Anyhow I am happy so far.. I just need to keep moving it forward. |

Isn't that heavy ?? It's gonna have MAAADDD torque twist if it is... But nothing some heavier springs can't take care of... Do you have room to drop the bed floor a little, that would add to the realism i think! You're gonna sand it round and paint it too i guess once the sculpting is done ? It's gonna look real good i'm sure ! |

What's it made of? Looks like balsa wood. Don't know how positive it will be for crawling,,,, but either way, very neat and creative. |

Well the truck is built up out of 1/8th lite ply..Its often used for building rc airplanes. There isa real possibility I will have to tighten the suspension up some though. Eventually I will get it sanded down and shaped more then painted. I am just going for an old truck look not a fancy paint job. I am more into trail driving than real aggressive stuff. I origonally built a slot car body of this and I liked how it turned out, so I built this bigger crawler body next. Slick60 slotcar test drive - YouTube |

Been working on it ! Front bumper block is a little over sized so I can work it down.. It bolts on from behind allowing removal for easier service, and carving. My scallops in the hood aren't quite right, for some reason I totally missed that until it was glued on.. Its mostly all out of scale but I had hoped to be closer... Also you might notice I have finally started building the top header panel. It is still loose and comes out of the front of the truck so I can work on it easier. I still haven't decide which grill or whether or not to put the roof with the dropped down center section or not. |

Thanks for the compliments, other than building a smaller slot car, this is my first real attempt at a crawler body. When you like unpopular trucks thats how it is ! After seeing the work of Headquake on youtube I was so impressed I decide to give it a shot.. from a slightly different approach. I had a bunch of old scrap lite ply from airplane kits laying around.. and the Mini Crawler would have probably collapsed under the weight of building it with carved down boards.. Not that it will be light when I am done ! hahahah Either way it has been a fun but slow project... |

Nice grill and very detailed ! Might i ask how you do these pieces ? Machine or hand made ?? If you carved that with your own hands and a pocket knife you're my new hero :-D |

I cut sticks and boards and wooden dowels to make the pieces. Most of the stuff has been dremeled on with shaping tips and sanding barrels as well. For example the bumper in the last picture is just a piece of a cheap board cut and sanded .. The headlights are a slice off of a round wooden dowel.. I will add a lens to them later. the actual grill bars are strips I cut from a Popsicle stick and then fit back together and glued...I try to make pieces that are close to accurate, and then I can piece them together and sand them. I am sure you have seen Headquakes work before. He is carving a lot of bigger pieces down, I am trying to build up. I think for me its easier if things can be built separate and then added on. The grill and bumpers will be removable as will be the seat. If you go at it slow it seems to fall in place. There have been a lot of times though were I was nervous about what to do next ! hahahah

OK, I admit I would rather take pics than work on it somedays... I have started doing some shaping to the slab sides and corners... |

Roof work !!!!! the low section might be a little deep, so I may sand down the sides a bit more. |

Hey my toes are my best feature ! ;) Its a truck based on 61-66 ford f-100's. There were quite a few different variables in the grills and boxes over the 6 years... I have been busy with so many d*mned other things I haven't got much done lately on the truck. |
